I think I found the 'brown note.'

Post by Invisible Man »

My car is rapidly deteriorating. I'm driving it a lot; close to 2,000 miles this week. Most weeks I put over 1,000 on it. The wheel bearings, I think, are going bad.

So it sounds really, really loud in there at 80mph. And I have had a lot of discomfort. Like: 'I think I have to go *right now.* The rumbling in the car is not too different from the rumbling in my stomach. It's happened for three days running (something something runny poop joke), which is right when the sound started getting really bad.

The struggle is real.

I had the front driver side wheel bearings blow in my old van on a windy ass road in the middle of nowhere once. It pretty much stops you in your tracks.

Have a B plan handy.

Oh, shit... :)* Was worried that this might happen. So it would be bad if it happened on the interstate...my plan B is to sell the car after I get this fixed.

Mind you, that was a 76 van. If you've got a more modern car chances are it's a hub assembly that is far less likely to come apart. On the old vehicles, it basically amounts to a washer holding roller bearings in place. When the old system goes, it does not give a fuck.

Good luck with it! I know the feeling of long hauls on questionable rigs.. builds character, or some shit. Enjoy the rumble.

Blown out both front wheel bearings/hub assembly on my 2000 Silverado. The previous owner put 20's on it and the stock setup can't handle extra diameter...puts too much strain on the bearings which are the like a single weird enclosed thing ( some dodge trucks had the built into the rotors so you had to buy both).

Stopped me dead both times and made the worst grinding sound.

Humming at 80? You check the balance? My wife just had a shop fuck up the balance on newly balanced tires (she refuses to let me do that stuff, so she just lets somebody else screw up) and it did the same kinda thing on her commute (~80 miles a day).

My old commute was terrible (something like 150 miles a day + an extra 200 on Monday and Friday)...I know that feeling.

I hate that people don't calculate rotational mass when they toss rims on vehicles
that jank will mess with milage braking and everything
people don't think

I drive about 8 miles each way, it's almost not long enough, when I drove 20 (30 minutes) I had time to shut off work-me and turn on dad-me,
with a 15 minute drive sometimes work-me gets out of the car and he is kindof an a-hole

I had to take the other car to work today to 1) survive, and 2) not shit my drawers.

Might just have to buy a new car this weekend...dunno.

...indeed. This thing is costing me like $4-500 hundred a month in repairs, though, plus $250 in gas. Something's gotta give.

that's pretty out of hand. you could make 2 car payments with that. i just traded in my smashed up rust bucket minivan for a reliable vehicle and the peace of mind is so worth it. you should buy a tesla, turn on the steering assist feature and thrum your moogs as you roll down the highway.

I just paid this fucker off a few weeks ago. Gah. But that's what I'm thinking, too (though I already have a minivan--which is rad). Thinking about a little commuter hatchback to zip under semis and such.

Where's the boner smiley when you need it? I have 100% set up self-playing patches on my little Moog synth and let it ride as I drive. Too tempting, though.
