Jellyfish skeeve me the fuck out. 55 Gallons is biggish, but not huge? You don't even necessarily need animals in there. Get some seaweed or sponges. Treat yourself to renewable sources of leafy greens and menstrual pads.

I just got rid of a 55. I used to be really into it, but as I started working longer hours and having a longer commute, it got harder and harder to put in the necessary time to keep up a nice environment.
You can do a really sweet freshwater setup for not a lot of money. I'm a fan of African lake cichlids, as they are cool looking and active and aggressive as hell (and mostly not expensive). Plus you can geek out over replicating their natural habitat.
Saltwater setups are hella-spensive by comparison. The aquarium and stand are by far the cheapest parts of the system.

Okay, but what if Chelsea Wolfe had done the Sealab 2021 theme song?

If it sounded like that I would be a bigger fan of CW.

i'm sticking w/ freshwater and do want fish, probably not cichlids though since apparently if you do they all have to be, don't get along w/ other types.
know angelfish & gourami are ok together, will have to learn about others...
jellyfish do look neat but fuck doing that.

Freshwater tanks are rad.
If you want super low maintenance and can get that sucker near a window with a heap of natural sunlight, research the Walstad Method.
It's pretty much a closed aquaponics system that replicates the nitrogen cycle in miniature. You'll have to do like weekly maintenance at first (but that's every tank) and eventually you can knock it back to monthly or less.
Gourami are cool but go for social schooling fish.
If you go Walstad you'll need plenty of plants, so schools of different coloured smaller things (like Danos and tetras, 25+ per school) really pop off the green as they cruise around.
Aquariums can become a really rad (and expensive) hobby but they don't have to cost a heap.
Plus 55g is enough to begin learning with and thankfully it's not so small that it'll go south quicker when you fuck it up.
And you will.
But that's all part of the game.

My Cichlids got along with tetra for about a year and then the tetra started to disappear
basically once the Cichlids (mine are convicts) got big enough to breed they kicked everything elses ass (even other convicts)
they are pretty cool but kindof a pain to deal with,

Yeah i want to get into cichlids but that territorial thing they do sounds expensive.
I dig a communal tank.
One day I might dedicate a tank to a lone predatory fish.

yeah having 50 little fish swimming around is cool, but then they overrun the thank and you have to scale em back or they die, it's a pain
the most adults we ever had was about 25 and we started with 2
