Stuff to do in the car.

Commuting three or more hours a day is killing me. I'll move soon, but...until then, what do you do? Books? Podcasts? I love my music, but it isn't always the right thing at 4:30am.

Specific titles? I like Maron's WTF a lot, and I love the guests on Hardwick's Nerdist podcast even if I can't really deal with Hardwick himself.

My job deals largely in texts, novels, and book-y things, so I do get a touch burned out on literary fiction, though I guess those recommendations are welcome, too.

Here I am now. Entertain me.

For the 4:30 am commute I was rocking for a while (this was just twice a week though, so YMMV) it was Welcome to Night Vale, Coast to Coast AM broadcasts, and pieces of music that demanded an hour of straight attention -- Lustmord, et. al. Anything that sounds good in the dark.

Night Vale is indeed awesome. I also love WTF... other faves are 99% Invisible, Sound Opinions, The Allusionist, Mortified (The Radiotopia podcasts in general seem pretty great). Then of course big ones like Radiolab, TAL.

Also Dark Barn's podcast.

My favorite new podcast is Death Metal Dads.
clickbait pitch:
Ever wondered when the last time Mike Scheidt from YOB cried during star trek: the next generation? Check out the episode he's a guest on to find out.

Also you ever checked out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History? It's my go-to long distance podcast. The episodes are like 4 hours long but his enthusiasm for the topics keeps it pretty engaging.

Podcasts I've been listening to regularly that haven't been mentioned: Song Exploder, I Was There Too.
Podcasts I don't listen to any more but enjoyed greatly before I got tired of them: Uhh Yeah Dude, Guys We Fucked, You Must Remember This (in particular, their run on Charles Manson last summer), Let There Be Talk (another of those "more for the guests than the host", but he isn't too bad once you get past his accent).

I really like My Brother My Brother and Me. They answer Yahoo Asks questions like some kind of advice column. They have some spinoff ones that are pretty good, like Adventure Time. They play dungeons and dragons with their dad on that podcast.

Also, if you're looking for something that's a bit more on-demand than Coast To Coast AM, you could check out The Higherside Chats or The Conspiracy Show Podcast Zoomer Radio AM740.The first one of those is a conspiracy podcast where they have a different guest expert every week to talk about the conspiracy they're an expert in. Lots of cool stuff and conspiracies I'd have never heard of or understood on there, gives lots of good information (it's like Welcome To Nightvale irl in some ways). The Zoomer AM740 one is essentially Coast to Coast for Canada.

My Brother My Brother and Me and The Adventure Zone are both, indeed, excellent, as are most shows on the Maximum Fun network. The Flop House is another favorite.
Big fan of Never Not Funny, Comedy Bang! Bang!, How Did This Get Made?, Spontaneanation, and too many other shows.

The only podcast worth listening to is Sleepycast.

Or you can watch porn on your phone just to see the reactions of other people around you (I'm assuming you're on a bus or something).

I would buy some Pimsleur language series. You can get 16 lessons for about $25. In a month you could order food or request the metro station in 3-4 new languages.

The only breasts I've gotten my hands on lately are from a chicken.

I stood next to Hardwick in line for a Beck show once...he is tiny! Like Owen Wilson sized ( I knocked Wilson to the ground because I couldn't see him...like under 5'4" or something.)

I usually ponder crazy contraptions in the car (that I write on some dumb paper and loose until 2 years later...). Otherwise I yell at people and tell them in the most loudly polite way that even though they have a BMW, they are no more human than me.

My wife commutes like that though...she likes the local morning show though so it cuts her need to find new stuff time in half.

When I would commute 4+ hours as a plumber I would smoke and eat chips... you know, construction style.

I just like driving though. Would prefer to be in a car than watching TV (well, before la).
