The bands have always been cool, but the last show we played, the audience wasn't really sure how to deal with what we were doing (or just didn't care), I think. We warmed up for a friend of Eivind who was releasing an album (basically him dressed up as a lady and screaming while techno is playing in the background). I don't know how to explain it. When we've played other shows, people have been paying attention to us, but this time, it felt like we were background music or something. Everyone was just going about their business, sitting at their tables drinking beer and making jokes, backs turned, shouting at each other. It was, weird. It was just the wrong crowd for our music, which (at least that particular time) was very slow and drone-y. It was a 20 min improv piece. There was this one old guy who loved us though, haha! Here's to you, you old psychrock geezer! :)*

In my mid 20s, I was in this kind of swamp-rock, Zeppelin sort of band—we always got really weird bookings. One of the funniest was when a club tried to book us with a LOTR themed rap group called Lord of the Rhymes. I cancelled that one because I was pissed off at the booker (he was supposed to let me book the night), but in hindsight I wish we'd played it :D

Our other totally odd men out show was when we played CBGB, in between a terrible emocore band (replete with white belts and "shy" members who played with their backs to the audience) and Dove. We didn't talk to either band (emos were lame, Dove too cool), but it ended up being one of the best shows we ever played. Shockingly, CBGB's staff were the coolest of anywhere we ever played in the city.

Oh and when we broke up, we canceled our last show on the books at this cheesy Long Island club, opening for Mountain. Still kicking myself for not making that one, haha...

shows where all the bands fit are good, shows where every band is way different from each other are good.

shows where one band isn't at all like the others isn't.

My band has played a couple shows where we are the odd band out, but the most so was a show we played around Halloween in a church basement. First off, we were the only people to actually show up in costume, so we were dressed as skeletons with face paint and everything, and everyone else was in normal clothes. Second, every band that played was a very similar blink 182 inspired pop punk, complete with the same high, kind of whiny vocals. It was also the only show we didn't go on first, so after about 4 generic pop punk bands, we got up there and played our weird kind of hardcore screamy punk. Everyone was nice, but they obviously weren't into it. Everyone's reaction was like "good set, I think." We also got compared to the b-52s, which was funny.

Luckily, for the last bunch of years, all of my bands have been on a local label that doesn't have a defined aesthetic per se, so much as a loose set of rules as to what it isn't. Also, all of the bands on the label all essentially get along, so while we don't all match up precisely, there is definitely a community vibe to label-centric shows.

When we're off on random gigs, though, it's anybody's guess how it's all gonna go.

We're the odd band out a lot of the time. The scene in the D is mainly pop punk, acoustic or metal

My band is pretty much always the odd one out. We're always getting stuck on bills with mediocre indie/garage bands as a hardcore band, or playing to screamo kids who just want to stand around with their arms crossed

My old band went from being a heavy band to a not nearly as heavy band and still kept getting all the same shows. I loved it, I actually enjoyed bumming people out by not being heavy but still being louder than the heavier bands.
