So i don't watch much things that aren't on hbo or that don't feature scantly-clad underage animated japanese girls. The other night i decided to watch SNL on hulu because Ariana Bell Grande was hosting and i want to fill her with Spaceys Secret Sauce and jesus christ if this show hasn't gone to absolute dog shit....

Yeah, the writers don't even try anymore.

Maybe it will get better. It's always had it's ups and downs, but clearly Lorne Michaels lost his edge a long time ago and has no idea what's funny compared to what does well in focus groups.

The last time i remember actually watching saturday night live will ferrel and tom green were wearing bald eagle costumes and throwing up in each other mouths in the audience.

That was a good bit.

They have too many cast members with too little appeal (at least half of them are youtube "sensations"), and they mostly try to cater to both the waning TV audiences on a Saturday night (people in beds) as well as those online after the fact (everybody else). Weekend Update usually has the best moments, even if it seems like you're watching Kidz News or whatever (which is actually a whole other series of sketches on the show that's pretty unbearable). Late night TV is a wasteland (everyone is kept alive just long enough to suffer), which is why I probably can't stop watching (I Love Mediocrity). If you like fart jokes (I Love Farts) & feeling uncomfortable, the January Jones episode years ago was legendary in its awfulness (still better than whatever happened to anyone on MadTV....except for that one guy who is now a current cast member on SNL ).

It's gonna get worse before it gets better

Possible Trump/Clinton election will make the show completely unwatchable

I think the show kinda has 2 'golden eras' (late 70s, early-mid 90s) and even in those eras, the hit rate for a funny sketch was really low.

I think part of the problem now is that you have a ton of other choices.
I would sit through a bad sketch or two when I was a kid because SNL was the only thing that was on.

It's always had waves—this one's particularly down. It's kind of the Kate McKinnon show at the moment.

I feel like if you look back to previous eras, despite how good or bad the cast is at any given moment, the show always follows the same arc. Funny shit at the beginning, maybe 4 solid sketches if you're lucky, then all downhill after that. I've rarely seen any different.

"What's the deal with SNL these days?" is p much an eternal question at this point.

The Jonah Hill monologue from two weeks ago was the worst I've ever seen.

SNL has been complete, objective shit for just under two decades. Before that, I would still say it's complete shit, but people can have their opinions, I'm not gonna judge. I just have always actively hated every moment I've seen of it. I wouldn't care if it was still very popular, but I can't stand that it's lauded as a piece of American fucking history.

Hahaha, I mean... I feel like the whole fucking show, for its whole fucking lifespan, has suffered from highlight reel syndrome. The greatest hits are funny as shit but there's always been a more than substantial amount of stinkers.

yeah I think all in all they had two good periods the first run and then a year or two in the late 80's/early 90's. SNL mostly made me wish someone would do a Graham Chapman and walk into the scenes to let them know that it had in fact dragged on too long, it had gotten silly and that it was not funny.
