Placid Audio

Here's a thread for all things Placid Audio :!!!:

So Mark at Placid Audio is making some really unique lo-fi sounding effect microphones. Ive been using his Copperphone for years, and maybe you saw those pics i posted of my new Carbonphone with its filter box. I also just bought one of his new Resonator A mics, specifically a high SPL guitar/bass cab mic. There are actually two different new Resonator mic's, the A and B.

Turns out he's a really nice guy too. Besides building cool mics he also plays bass with Polyphonic Spree, so I turned him onto ILF and hopefully he'll find this thread and say :hello:

Still planning on making some clips of the Carbonphone and it's multi-filter box, really loving it

Anybody else using these?

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

I used to use the copperphone all the time when I was a younger. Now I don't have one. My job doesn't see the need, despite how right they are for a broadcast place. I need my own. This is something I plan to rectify.

Hello all... Mark Pirro from Placid Audio here and I'm new to the forums. I love resources regarding the mangling of audio and look forward to broadening my horizons by reading up on all the cool stuff posted on ilovefuzz.com

Noticed Uncle Grandfather was posting about our upcoming Resonator A mic... (by the way thanks for the shout out Uncle Grandfather!). Because it's not officially available yet, we don't have any samples posted on our website. For those interested in what this mic sounds like, I dug up this electric guitar audio sample. For reference, you hear the performance with a standard SM57, next you hear the same performance with the Resonator A. Finally, you hear a 50/50 blend of the SM57 and the Resonator A.

If you have any questions about the Resonator A and it's availability, feel free to continue the discussion here or contact me personally: http://placidaudio.com/contact

Here to help!

-Mark

Hi Mark. I've been waiting for the resonator mics since I heard this back in 2014

I'm sure lots has changed since then, but I am excited to hear more demos!

Has anyone used the Copperphone through pedals or anything like that? I'm using a harmonica mic for that stuff now but this looks way more interesting.

One of my bandmates has a Copperphone.
We used it to record the piano on this track from our last album:

We also used it live for a couple of gigs, as "effect mic" for the singer, Wovenhand-style,
but we stopped doing it for some reason I can't remember. Probably feedback trouble.

I've messed with it a little bit through pedals... sound pretty rad through delay/verb. Also found that it performed surprisingly well recording glockenspiel (mentioned this in another thread), surprisingly non-shitty sounding, I guess because of the very focused range of the instrument.

Here's a track from my old band—we used it on vox on the verses.

Note: I just used the URL code because the Souncloud button unfortunately doesn't seem to post a proper widget, instead a "listen on Soundcloud" thingy. Annoying. There a way around this?

Soundcloud disabled flash embeds a couple months ago because they are dicks (or something).

I've wanted one for ages. Really looking forward to using it as a blend mic on banjo.

Thanks Mark! I've probably listened to that sample close to 15 times now
