Musical Irrationalities

I think most everyone has quirks that are either completely or somewhat irrational. Two for me off the top of my head are, if I know what guitar was used on a song, and I have it, that's what I use when I play them...So Hendrix, Smashing Pumpkins, Chili Peppers, etc I play on my Strat. Zeppelin I play on my Tele, and so on. Further, it feels wrong to me to play something like AC/DC or Black Sabbath on my Strat, even if it sounds good.

Another is, if I associate a band with a person I dislike, it ruins the music for me, no matter how much I might like it. Two that come to mind are In Flames and Alanis Morissette. While I never had super strong feelings towards either to begin with, there are two individuals that I no longer speak to who loved these artists, thereby preventing me from even exploring the possibility of liking the music. I know it's dumb and totally irrational, but there it is.

Anyone else have similar quirks?

I recently realized my music selections are all related to weather

not sure if it is irrational
but someone asked me if I was playing ska and without thinking I said "It's too cold out"

For some reason (because the 90s) I own alot of Ska music, but it only gets played in July

If the band is basically a cover band I hate it... even if it's really only my perception of the band that makes them eternally indebted to a particular/singular artist or group.

For example, we have a local band here who are, for all intents and purposes, a Mars Volta cover band. Nice guys, great musicians, good songs (insofar as they all sound like TMV), so I can't stand to listen to them for more than 5-10 minutes.

I don't know if that is a bad thing. It's like what is the point if the band isn't trying to do something of their own?

This. Somewhat shamefully, because I really do try to not judge people and respect others and all that jazz, but there are a few humans who have gone through my life that have ruined bands for me. These haven't even been terrible lovers gone psycho or anything like that, just coworkers or school mates so extremely fired up about a band paired with their personality that I can't separate the two. Whenever I think of Alexisonfire I think of my friends boyfriend and get so . That's just one bad example, but there are many more. Tool, Metalicca, Red Hot Peppers, all those huge generic rock bands are just extremely ruined to me by a few people I have had to spend lots of time with. I'm trying to better myself but it isn't bringing the music back haha

I cant stand music, every five bands there's a cover song (not an actual cover) but the whole song is just a rip off of a previous band then you realize that the whole band's image is another band's and you just get over them. If their music wasn't boring, unskilled, or too drawn out to begin with. Which is usually the case in which I don't listen to a band beyond 30 seconds of any one song, unless nothing is happening in the song, then I'll skip ahead and if the part I land on doesn't grab me. It sucks.

And then the point of someone ruining a band coz they were so obsessed with said band you can't even like the band nor do you even speak with this "friend" anymore. I have a long list of friends and bands I don't listen to or associate with anymore because they ruined a lot of music that I'd otherwise think is good for me.

Sooner or later someone is gonna come along and say just do your own thing, like what you wanna like, don't worry about it, etc.. But, NO, you're wrong. Please and thank you.

I can't stand bands that are obviously only interested in playing whatever's popular and getting 'big'. I mean I wish them luck but fuck off and go try to be successful and leave me the hell alone. I'm not interested in being a rung in your career ladder.

The want to be 'ggod' at guitar that creeps in over being 'good' at music.

A lot of times I decide I don't like super mainstream pop artists but then if I see some "underground" music review site give it a solid rating i'll suddenly have respect for that artist even without really giving it another listen

Other people's opinions tend to have more of an effect on my own (if mine isn't fully formed yet) then I would like

There's nothing wrong with having influences. But even then, the music I write is blatantly ripping off most of my favourite bands - it's just that i'm not in a band, playing live or recording. It's fun writing inspired Ocean Machine riffs in my bedroom after work. I can't imagine anyone being interested in my masturbatory fantasies. Sure, it'd be fun to jam around with the dorks that are into it, I can't see it being an interesting show for anything else. :idk:

I have a problem with music that can't be recreated live. Even when it comes to techno and IDM, if it can't be performed all in one take by actual humans, it bores me. And I hold myself to this standard as well in the music that I make; if it's not something we could recreate at a gig, I veto it.

On a side note, judging by most of the comments here about bands sounding like other bands, most of you would loathe the music that my band makes. We don't just wear our influences on our sleeves, we drape ourselves in them.

Every song I write sounds like a mashup of 2 or 3 things that I've been listening to at that point. I hate it.
