A co-worker of mine just said "You're an alright guy even though you put two spaces at the end of every sentence after a period." And I'm like no shit that's how you're SUPPOSED to do it. But he (and the internet) claims that it's just an anachronistic holdover form the early days of typesetting. I can't find an actual good answer as to WHY or HOW or WHY NOT but I'm going to keep searching. And also interrupting my train of thought after ever sentence because I need to think about how many spaces I'm putting after the period. Anyone else do that?
C
p.s. In this post I have placed only one space after every period so I can "practice". Ultimately I will have more time to play with LEGOs.

I don't. I took typing class, and yea that was the proper way to do it back then. But like DOS said.. don't do it. It no longer is needed and looks pretty ass now. It won't be too hard to retrain yourself to do it correctly now.

It's not a thing 'all of a sudden', it's from like ~20 years ago, when word processors, which had replaced typewriters in everyday life, had more or less uniformed spacing between the space of letters/symbols/blank space.
There's some argument to be had about the benefits of two sentences instead of one as far as reading comprehension goes:
Dr. Sherman Sticks makes sexy beats. Even Blockhead thinks so (but he doesn't like the crash). And Blockhead doesn't like anything.

edit: ILF autocorrects to one space. There goes that example.

ONE SPACE AFTER A PERIOD!!!
The other way is wrong and I fucking hate clients that give me copy to put in a brochure, or whatever, and then I have to go in and fix every sentence.

It was also, allegedly, preferred by some publishing houses for notes on manuscripts. It's still wrong.

I have a friend who is a high school English teacher and he posted about this the other day, taking the anachronistic view. I was like "if you're pushing them towards English as a major you should at least want them to be able to get along in the publishing industry."

Fuck. One more habit to break.
I almost did it just now too. Just gonna start typing like Ryan Summit.
This seems better to me
Somehow
Than retraining myself
To only use one space

The publishing industry was one of the last holdouts for double space after a period, incidentally. They used to require it for manuscripts even into the mid 90's.
Frankly "alright" is much more of an abomination than this. It's 'all right' for everyone that isn't Bob Dylan.

I've never heard of space space. Always used just space. And that while I really like S P A C E .
But the Ryan Summit way
is alluring to me, too
for it looks and feels
just like a poem

I kinda find it funny the people in here in just this thread saying how they are trying to avoid using it while typing on here. The message board automatically corrects it. Hell most boards I visit do it as well and so does facebook.

to two-spacers...

Fuck all of you, especially D.o.S. whose example starts a sentence with a conjunction.
When and by whom did this become correct practice? Common practice does not count.
And alright is a word; it does not have the same meaning as all right.
(Admittedly, I use one space when using my phone)
Consider my pets peeved.
