I really dig the "wave" sound, and early Defeater/Touche are definitely hardcore bands and two of my favorites. That said, definitely looking more on the heavy/punk side. I've been listening to way too much shoegaze/emo revival related stuff again lately. Need more d-beats and two steps in my life.

Bad Brains/Circle Jerks are two of my favorites but I never got super into Cro-Mags or the archetypal New York sound past youth crew. That said, Age of Quarrel is a fucking incredible album.

Edit: Just listened to that Cro-Mags link and wtf how have I not heard this before? Way less metal sounding.

Yeah NYC hardcore doesn't do much for me but the demo + Age of Quarrel are so rad.

Yeah it started to get too detached from punk around that phase. I like modern hardcore that isn't hardcore punk, but the transitional areas are really hard for me to get into.

I didn't want to be "that guy" as D.o.S. so bravely was but yeah, the classics of the genre are classics for a reason

That whole "wave" bands thing have all seemed to have declined in my book. Not as into most of their output in the past two years. All nice guys/bands. I've played with most of those bands in the past few years. all very solid dudes and they're doing some cool things. maybe my tastes are changing drastically. pianos is the only band whose recent outputs have been remotely interesting to me. whatevs.

that said. pretty sure I don't really listen to a lot of hard core. give up the ghost/american nightmare is tight.

I would really only call stuff from Earth A.D. as "hardcore" as far as the Misfits go...they were really more in the vein of the first wave 77 stuff for most of the catalog.

Dead Kennedys are my favorite (up there with Crass and stuff)...I hate the remasters and shit that they pulled here in the last ten years though.

Growing up basically there was the first wave and second wave...most things in second wave were called hardcore (with exceptions like Adicts, Major Accident, Toy Dolls, Oi! stuff, ska punk). We more separated by scene...you know Gilman bands, UK hardcore (now called UK82 or anarcho or other stuff)...I mean Subhumans and Black Flag were both "hardcore" just from different countries...now one is hardcore the other is anarcho. All weird to me.
