Sassafras was replaced by wintergreen in the 1970s as the main flavoring of Root Beer when it was deemed a carcinogen. Some root beers really have that mint flavor more than others and others have increased sarsaparilla flavor. I feel that carbination is a very important part of a good root beer. Personally, the more minty it is (i.e. less rooty) the worse it tastes.
I made it once. Kind of fun, but really hard to find the ingredients. I went to a Chinese Herbal medicine store to get the weirder stuff like juniper and sarsaparilla. I think that c02 carbination is better than natural (via sugar and yeast, but champagne yeast or something may work better than what I used). Wintergreen was the hardest to find and if you break it down enough it turns into the chemical equivilent of asprin; yes, it is possible to overdose on rootbeer if it isn't made right. I almost had to use essential oils from a health store for the wintergreen...but that was weird because they may or may not be "food safe".
Dr. Pepper is really good to me too. I've been on a carbinated fruit punch thing though. Don't know why.

I seriously can't drink any sodas except root beer, I'm all about that craft root beer, the big box brands are pretty unimpressive. Root Beer and liquor is a good combo too. Root beer forever
