Recycling song bits? moop?

sooooooooo..... my drummer human seemed..... not..... bothered? but had to think about? something that i thought was no bigs at all.

there's a song or two we have that are kinda garbage and no fun to play live. but each has one or two riffs i think are worth reusing in something else. one of these MEH songs is recorded, but we're probably neverrrrr going to play it live as recorded. last time we did we cut down a section like BUTTS.

is it weird to cannibalize something to save a good piece from all the poo bits surrounding it? only okay if it's not recorded and released? or fair game on ANY TRACK, ANY TIME? ALL YOU LITTLE MUSIC BITCHES BEST TO WATCH YO ASS. DON'T GET CAUGHT SLIPPING.

murp?

It's all fair game, all the time, if it's something you wrote. I've definitely heard bands put bits and pieces from older songs into newer songs and it never bothered me. I know that TMV used to do that shit all the time, they'd take something from live jams on tour and throw it into songs on the next album.

Totes ok. Go for it - think of it as saving the riff from being mothballed. You wouldn't want that poor little riff to miss out on digging into people's earballs, right? It would get so lonely! Do you want sad, lonely riffs that never get played out?

DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN... I MEAN RIFFS... THE BABY LITTLE RIFF CHILDREN...

It's the whole Zappa reference-your-old-songs-for-a-sense-of-continuity thing, which I unashamedly do. It's fun taking a riff or line and playing it in an entirely different context down the road. :idk:

I have a riff from 2007 that I've managed to fit into a song from every band I've played in since then.

I love this. Makes me feel better for jamming on the same riffs over and over every time I warm up.

I think it's totally ok. If you're really famous people in the blogosphere might rip you a lil bit, like the last modest mouse album, but for anyone else I'm sure no one at all will notice. No offense intended at all.

Yeah I think it's cool, I do the same all the time. Not on stuff I've recorded and nobody listens to what I record but I WOULD even if I was a famous person because a rad riff should not be wasted.

I think that's what writing's all about, right? You try something out, get rid of crap (drummer) that doesn't work, keep what you like, build from there.

it's also ok to rerecord the entire same song again if you think you can do it better or different.
i wish more bands would it - sometimes on the first LP or something, people have really good songs but a bit of a crappy recording/mix/master budget, and i wish that they would just rerecord them all later

Call it a "persistent stylistic theme."
