I've probably have about 20 flavors of dirt and the thought comes through my mind that I could stand to drop a few pedals, especially ones I've not bonded with...

...the problem is the whole "bonding" thing changes with time. One such pedal was the Screeching Owl: Hydra, in my hands I could not make it sound musical, until recently when I stumbled upon the perfect settings to add a touch of synthy chaos to the pedals'a angry-foaming at the mouth fuzz and magic happened. Somewhere in the back of my mind I think that magic can happen with any of my less loved pedals, so it would be foolish of me to sell any of them.

Anyone else with this problem? Thoughts?

I have sellers remorse sometimes, but I've found that if I flip a pedal once and buy another one down the road, I'm almost guaranteed to flip it again.

I operate under the principle that pretty much any pedal can be bought again in due time. There's too much shit for me to try and I don't have enough money to keep everything so I cycle stuff out as I get bored/uncreative with it for something new.

i keep some things that i dont use, because i feel that they have something there, and i might or will have a use for them in the future

other things i sell, sometimes too hastily perhaps, because there is something irritating or annoying about them that isnt going to change (like volume jumps/drops, for example)

MOST of the time, I can sell, and re-buy later just to find out I'll sell again.

I've had some seller's remorse for discontinued stuff though. If you have a 3 knob Hoof, keep it!


However, some fuzzes for example, can't be 100% replicated from unit to unit. They just all sound different. If you have a gem, KEEP IT.

Example, I have a SS/BS Team Awesome Fuzz with the Lumberjack photo graphic. It sounds significantly better than the other 2 TAFM I've owned. I also have an old SUF standard Civil War that is yet to be equalled, even by other SUF Civil Wars. It's just special.

Never flipped a pedal, only traded one I hated for a better one. I have a horder mentality when it comes to music gear. I never know when it will come in handy. Anything else in my life is fair game to get rid of.

That's different. At the risk of generalizing, there's more individual variation in how instruments play than in pedals.

I get sentimentally attached if they're gifts. For example, last Christmas my wife got me a Phantom Arcade, and my mom and gramma went in on a Black Forrest OD for me...I don't think I'll let either of those go. Of course, I use them too. Also, I have a Hydra, and it is temperamental, but so awesome. And I don't think he's making them anymore.

Totally agree!

I went through 10-15 basses before finding the one I'm in love with. Of course it's an expensive bastard, but it does everything I want and need.

Pedals on the other hand, I get bored sometimes and just flip shit. Currently I'm in love with everything I have and couldn't see myself parting with any of it. BUT that shit is like trading cards to me. You gotta try new ones out. Otherwise what the fuck is the point? I mean, being happy with your set up is awesome. But it's fun to try new things and I for one cannot afford to just buy everything. COUGH Excane COUGH. LOL. JK.

But seriously. Pedals can be re-purchased for the most part. If it's vintage stuff, then I'd be reluctant. For like a minute! hahahahah

I'm reluctant to sell most any gear I have, because very few things I buy are on impulse.
There's usually hours of research and comparative shopping involved, on top of the fact my taste leans toward vintage, rare, obscure items that are considerably hard, if not impossible to truly "replace" due to the myriad of variables involved.
Rarely does putting in that legwork lead me to a quick turnaround...but yeah it does happen once in a while. It's to be expected when you're looking to try new things.
Also I've *trimmed the herd* so many times now, where the survivors are my gems that have evaded multiple trade-in/trade-ups and have no real room left for improvement. They're "the one"

Some pedals I don't bond with immediately, but it really is a matter of matching them in their *proper* context, whether it means a different instrument, amp or stacked with another pedal. Sometimes you don't already have the gear to make it happen. In those cases, I'm much more inclined to trade [them] toward whatever's up next on my shortlist. I don't put cart before horse....anymore
