Feeling so uninspired. What should I do?

I'm trying to write some riffs for a new band. It's me on guitar and my friend on drums for now. Noise rock shit. I'm stuck and haven't written a single sick riff that could become a song.

I'm not really sure what to do. Maybe try a different tuning? Right now I'm in D Standard. Figured I'd shoot you guys and see what you do when you're in a rut like this.

I'll try to find a stream of it soon and watch.
I'm not the most skilled but I'm at a point where i feel like my skill is plateauing.

The plateau is worse than hitting a wall to me. I hate when I write a riff and I'm like "shit, I could have written this 5 years ago."

What effects are you using? Sometimes switching up dirt can be inspiring

Try introducing a different pedal into your setup. Sometimes switching gear things up can be an inspiration.

EDIT: neonblack, dude?

main overdrive is an ocd. civil war big muff clone got sent back for repairs because the switch is messed up or something. signal was cutting out and making it unreliable.

i reeeaaally want a saturnworks feedback looper/true bypass pedal so i can slam on it with an eq and muff going on simultaneously.

Start practising naked for a bit and then incorporate war paint and/or fairy lights.

Just play scales, or patterns with your fingers, to a metronome. Do this over and over, with different tempos. The idea not being that you'll turn into Yngwie, but rather get your fingers moving in different ways.

+1 to Neonchank's idea as well. Use a pedal that is totally inappropriate for the sound you are aiming to get just to get things sounding different. Try and write metal as fuck riffs with just clean tone and a flanger or something.

The other thing I try and do sometimes is just write a riff that sounds like a total knock-off of someone else, preferably unrelated to the genre I'm composing in. Try and write an Iron Maiden tune, or a Tom Waits song, or a Morbid Angel tune. Unless you are like Paul Gilbert or some other goofball who knows how to play everything, you'll end up filtering it through your usual way of playing/your style, and you'll find something if not cool than at least different, which can be a nice start.

Lastly, try and write in a key signature you never use (or if you don't do music theory and stuff just base a riff around a note you never use/fucking hate, or alternately identify a chord/note that you love and avoid it like the plague). Being a metal dude for me this is writing stuff in F. F means I can't do dem chugga chuggas on the open E, (unless I'm leading back to the F, which in itself is a bit unconventional) which forces me to reconsider how the hell I'm going to get the metalz in there. Good fun. E flat is another key that is good to mess around in because it is super annoying trying to play my usual schtick in E flat.

Take one of those big bags of bird seed, the kind that has several different types of seeds in it. Dump it out on the floor or table. Separate out the seeds by type and group them into piles. While you are doing this, think about order, uniformity, certainty, and truths.

Now that you have all these piles of similar seeds, take a close look at the seeds and realize that each seed is actually very different from the other ones in their respective piles. They will vary by shape, size, color etc. Note all the differences you can observe.

Now, start to reverse the process. Take a seed from each pile, one by one, and start building 1 big mixed pile. While doing this, think about chaos, deconstruction, formlessness, and lies.

Hope this helps.
