Outdated Technology topic

Dudes, When was the last time you saw a straight up regular old Telephone? That was not also a tiny computer, I mean.
I miss gadgets of old. Even payphones, man. Do you guys have working payphones in your towns?
I was watching some old Outer Limits recently and anytime there was a computer in the scene, it was a damn roomful of blinking lights and knobs.
In this here increasingly electronically evolving world, I'd like to see a discussion on 'old skool' technology.
I wanna hear from you folks who appreciate guitar pedals (probably among other electrical doodads new & old).
Is it weird to get nostalgic when we see slide projectors, Rolodexes, rotary phones, old modems, early era electronics, etc ?
I walked by an old payphone on the way to the laundromat the other day, picked that bitch up and listened to the dial tone for two minutes straight.

Did you tune your guitar to the dial tone?

I miss payphones.
I miss old TVs. miss VCRs. I miss casettes.
I miss koolaid.
I miss valvestate. I miss digital-ass distortion.
I miss canopeners. I miss skittles. I miss surge.
But I'm glad condoms work better now.

I think 440 is actually one of the frequencies in the dial tone, but I didn't has guitar with me.
Oh shit yeah man, cassette tapes. That's what i'm talking about ^
I realize this isn't a new conversation here, but wtf were we thinking abandoning cassette tapes
for the Wave of the Future that is the Compact Disc. Scratches weren't a huge problem before!
I feel like that ramped up the instant gratification factor too. Like, when I was a kid and I wanted to
watch the same movie over and over, I had to wait at least as long as it took to rewind.
Kids nowadays just watch fucking Frozen or whatever on Infinite Repeat

it gave you time to use the bathroom, get a drink refill and popcorn or whatever. it wasn't just mindless waiting. it served a purpose. It helped with everything.
Now I just want to slob and bust out the VHSs and watch some stuff.
OH YEAH. 90's movies were awesome, too. It wasn't just formulaic cash grabs. Mortal Kombat was fun. Starship Trooper.

Huh? How are these things outdated. I guess a lot of cans now have those little pop tops, but not all of them.
Do you miss skittles and kool aid because you're not a kid anymore? That's silly. One of my favorite things about being an adult is that I can eat as much candy as I want any time I want.

Reading old text files from 80s and 90s BBSes is my jam.
Especially the ones that are basically 'zines.

Fender guitars, they are cool and all but lets face it, they are not basses or synths, they make everyone sound like they are playing a fender guitar which is fine but it just isn't 1957 anymore..

I used payphones extensively and exclusively a couple years ago. One of those things where you think they're gone, but when you actually use them you start noticing them everywhere

Brings up a mini obsession of mine: Obsolete tech that wasn't obsolete when the song lyric was written. Examples: the Replacements' Answering Machine, the Campfire Girls' Motorola Casanova [as in the pager]. In Pyschedelic Furs' All of the Law "and they're taking it down / written in silver" I've always taken to be about the old silver emulsion camera film, now a throw back.

Remember carriage and buggies? Those things were the shit! Back in my day we'd take a half day ride to the super market and be back in time for bed. Ahhh those were the days.
Seriously though. Technology is the shit. I can't honestly say I have any nostalgia for any old technology.
Pay Phones. The first word in this fucks me up. What I have to pay you? The fuck? No but really. Fuck quarters and fucking calling cards. That shit was dumb. I seriously cannot remember the last time I wanted to use a pay phone.
House phones. Utterly useless. I have to do what to make you fucking telemarketers stop calling me constantly? Also, cordless phones were weird to me.
TV's. You have to admit that the advances in this probably the best there has been.
Fuck I'd even say fuck records and that I like MP3's and MP4's better.
Ok I'm going to go hide now...
lol

Old TVs are the best way to play old games though.

It's true that you can't play duck hunt on an LCD screen.

Not only that, but older systems were't designed for the resolutions of current TVs. Hooked up the N64 to our 42", which isn't huge compared to others, and tried playing Mario Party with my wife...It was horrible. everything was stretched and..just bad.
