I've got a first gen iPad Mini with a bunch of instrument apps and effects stuff. I've been thinking about getting more use out of this, which could be from hooking up keyboard and/or pad controllers, but I'm wondering about using a guitar instead.

I know vaguely of pitch-to-MIDI apps and the Sonuus i2m converter hardware. Gold standard seems to be the Fishman Triple Play pickup, though I'd have to save up for that one.

Anyone getting by with good or junk hardware and conversion apps? How's tracking and latency?

Should I just find a closeout on the Rockband Mustang guitar-ish MIDI controller thing to have something closer to my paradigm?

(Clean slate here for interfacing hardware, so suggest whatever works.)

Free iOS app "MIDI Guitar" from Jam Origin. If you have an iPhone or iPad, get it. If you have a hardwire input, use it. If not, like me, you can use the onboard mic with headphones plugged in to avoid feedback. Tweak sensitivity. Switch to MIDI output. Leave the app running but close its window. Open your choice of synth or sampler amp that accepts MIDI note. Blow an evening grinning at the new fun.

Not perfect, but man it opens up some doors.
