I'm mostly just entertaining a fantasy, but if I wanted to think about moving to Australia someday in the future, what would you tell me?

Move to Texas instead, it's basically like the closest you can get to the Australia of the USA.

Haha!
It's expensive and in places racist and backwards. We get shit at a minimum six months after everyone else does if we get it at all.
You'll need private health cover, which I understand is not as financially brutalising as it is in the states.
You'll also need to bring your treasure gear with you because you can't find shit down here.
Music scenes are generally incredibly close knit outside of mainstream radio/festival bands.
BUT, we have a pretty laid back attitude about most stuff, there is a fuckton of beautiful country to see and it's not so far to travel to SE Asia or the pacific for cheap holidays.
Winter is comparatively mild in most places. Strap yourself in for summer, it sits above 30 just about everywhere, breaks 40 in some regions. All the more reason to hit the beach.
Provided you live south enough to avoid the crocs, irukanji, and other poisonous jellies. There's sharks everywhere, but you'll learn the rules about them. Oh, and how to swim out of a rip, too.
Employment is a sticky wicket for immigrants right now, so be open minded about what work you might have to take. The immigration process itself can be rough depending on your long term plans.
Our hipsters are painful, but you can degrade them in public if need be.
We have great beers now.
I hope you like fucking BBQs.
We call everyone "cunt". As a term of endearment.
We have NZ to hang shit on.

Thanks

It's more just a thought right now. I might start a "move somewhere cool" savings account. I wondered what life is like there because I haven't been and I don't really know anyone there. Plus there's the whole "job" thing.

It's actually ok here. But those are some points worth considering.
We are pretty fortunate in that we have managed to remain fairly insulated from a lot of bullshit that affects the rest of the world. So our way of life is definitely something we treasure.
I think the flip side is we have become insular and there is a real danger that the racism, bigotry, conservativism and xenophobia held by the older generation here may make a comeback in the face of any progressive thinking that might be going on.
When I say progressive, I mean thinking about the future, the kind of world we are creating now and what it will actually be like then if we can make shit work now, for everyone. There are a lot of Australians that are prepared to abandon the way we currently do things for the better, for a way that makes sense, but we have a government that wants to sell us into the slave pits of big corporations and rape the country for a quick mining buck. As well as a media that has a vested interest in these happenings and keeping us scared and stupid.
So, bout the same as anywhere else really.

Pope has summed it up pretty nicely.
I've never been overseas so it's hard for me to say whether moving here would be a positive compared to other places in the world.
There are a lot of things i absolutely HATE about Australia. But the reason i'm so angry about those things are because otherwise Australia has a lot going for it and it sucks that the overall experience can somewhat ruined by the retarded portion of the population.
The biggest upside to me is probably that the population density is so low that you can go just about anywhere and not feel like you're suffocating, and there are plenty of places where you can live within an hour or so of cities and basically be isolated if you want to. Plenty of beautiful country to see, all you need is a car because the public transport system is deplorable (in sydney at least).
I've learned to just not pay attention to mainstream news or current affairs at all, and to avoid discussing such things with most people. If you can do that then the rampant xenophobia, bigotry, wealth obsession, misogyny etc won't press on your mind as much. There are plenty of nice, informed, intelligent people to make friends with but if you're working and stuff you're gonna find yourself around people that seem nice but talk about women or migrants etc in a disgusting way that's considered 'normal'.
I think it's worth holidaying here for a few weeks first to see if the lifestyle is appealing to you. Although that would be pretty expensive.
'murica seems kinda fucked up in different ways so you might love it or hate it in comparison. Australia is definitely a laid-back country, which can be good and bad.

This and thank you.
I actually really love my country, not to the point of the sycophantic nationalism that seems to be in vogue here at the moment, though.
What angers me is that we tolerate the mediocrity and criminal behaviour of our elected officials. We can be so much more. We need to change the system entirely.
It is fucking corrupt and more un-Australian than the bullshit they talk and try spoon feed us about what "is Australian".
Team Australia....fuckwit.

That fucking gif.
I kind of figure that anywhere I end up living will have its pros and cons. I've always wanted to move faaaaaaaarrrrr away from where I live, which is only and hour away from where I grew up.
But yeah, a vacation would be nice to check things out. I'm mostly curious, because the idea of moving out of coutnry comes up from time to time.

Just go to New Zealand, they've also got better Beer and Wine.
I like Australia but would happily move if I had more money and no life shit to deal with,
