F*ck Computers

So I likely just blew my CPU, motherboard, graphics card, or some combination of the three
Over the past couple weeks I have seen some weird issues with the grahpics; inverted colours, some matrix-y green animations, not displaying anything for periods of time. Overall it should have been an indication to have it looked at but I haven't had the time and the issues were temporary.
Today it wouldn't display at all. So I tried restarting it. I get random flashes of start up screens but still mostly just no display.
Then it makes a weird noise and shuts off and turns itself back on and then off and on again
This time during start up I get the blinking LED codes indicating CPU damage. Weird thing is it still manages to turn on and get through all the start up just with no display.
So I take it in to Best Buy where I bought it and apparently my warranty was up last summer and it'll take $100 for HP to even look at it.
I'm taking it to one of the electronic lab technicians at my university to see if they can help. If not I'm probably just going to get a new computer. My last computer had similar issues that kept occurring every couple of months so I'm not going to bother having HP repair it.
Anyways end rant.
If I was to get a new computer what should I get?
Something good for music, movies, and light gaming.
And not another damned HP

Just buy all the parts you want and have a local computer shop put it together for you. They'll charge like $100. Thats what I always do. You can get a much better computer that way.

Switch to fucking Linux. Move yourself off the fucking grid and high five the boutique pedal builder of the computer industry.
Oh what, can't live without iTunes? Photoshop? Protools? There's alternates..... Don't be swayed by the Steve Jobs Bill Gates conspiracy theory.... You're too hip to buy into this false hipster marketing tactics.....

ehhhhh. I have Ubuntu on my old laptop. I still can't make that thing talk to my fucking printer, and I've tried every fucking thing. It's little shit like that which pisses me off about Linux. Also, I can't get it to recognize half of my USB shit. You'd think after basically 20 years of development, they'd have figured out the drivers bullshit by now. That's why linux will never crack the consumer market. People want to buy shit and have it just WORK. 99.999999% of people don't want to sit there reading through forums and newsgroups trying to find a goddamn driver.

I've always wanted to get Linux but I agree with Bigchief; I really just want something that's easy and that works.
That being said I have no interest in MacBooks. I was looking at the ASUS N550JV earlier. It's got potential for my needs.
I'm realizing that I'm done school in a couple weeks and won't need a laptop until September. I might just say fuck it and see how the summer is without a crippling internet addiction.

Actually the computer I'm running right now is an HP and I bought it around 07-08 and the only thing I've done was update the graphic card so I can play diablo 3. other than that it's been great to me. The computer I use for recording is 2 years old now and I think it's a gateway I just bought off the shelf at office depot. Maybe stop downloading tons of bullshit and you'll be fine. I don't go on all types of stupid sites or download much of anything aside from tracks I'm supposed to record to and haven't came across any problems.

I know this sounds pretty obvious, but have you opened it up and dusted everything out with compressed air? The display errors sound like your video card is overheating, and CPUs don't like to be pushed beyond their limits, either.
Also/after that, start the PC up, hit F8 while it's booting and choose the "disable system restart" whatever option, then see what happens. It might still shut itself off, but won't auto-restart.

Im going to also suggest building one. I dont think you should pay someone to build one for you. Its really really easy. Research and find the parts right for you. My little cousin just built a computer from the ground up. Hes 10.
As far as an OS, Wndows 7 is pretty cheap now. DO NOT WINDOWS 8
My computer is an all-in-one. Quad core processor, 8gb ram, more storage than ill ever use. I can run ableton, fl studios, 100 VSTs without lag. But I cant play any games made after 2010. I cant even run the sims 2 without it looking like shit. Cant upgrade graphics card because all in one. Laptop parts in a moniter. Huge oversight on my part. I deal. I dont even use the internet on that computer. Fuck ruining another computer because I like porn and pirating too much.

Yeah I've tried dusting it already.
It's always had overheating issues in the past too. Completely unable to play games without it getting to ridiculous temperatures. So I dust it fairly regularly.
And I don't mean to totally bash HP but my past two computers have been HPs and both have died stupid hardware related deaths.
I'm actually kind of excited to not have a computer now. When I get home I'll have my parents computer for the basics. Maybe I'll just spend the summer slowly picking out the parts I'd want in a custom build.

Was it a laptop? I pretty much decided not to buy another laptop after mine died a few years ago. They don't last. Proper cooling seems to be a huge issue with laptops and I assume other compact computers. I'm using a decade old cheap Gateway PC right now. When I buy another computer, it will probably be one I put together from parts, like suggested above.

Yeah it was a laptop
I wasn't really considering a desktop but I guess that is an option as well

Honestly i dont think an active/always on antivirus ever did ANYTHING for me and I used military issue Norton for like 10 years. Right now i have AVG(cuz its free). Malwarebytes has gotten rid of almost any issue ive ever had. I used to charge people to fix their computer using only two tools. Malwarebytes and Google. Easiest money I ever made.

I've been told that plain old free Windows Security Essentials (called Windows Defender on 8) is the best.
I run a full scan once a month or so and don't visit dodgy sites and afaik I've never had a virus.
