Anyone here from Santa Fe?

Can you tell me about it?
My girl is going to apply to a grad school there so I wanted to get to know it, though, we wouldn't move for maybe another year or two.
Tell me everything. From music to economics to food. Wikipedia is ok but I'd much rather get a first person account.

Thanks!

Joe Gagan lives close by, in Albuquerque. You should talk to him.

I have family that live in New Mexico.
There used to be more of them, but they left.

Is that a Mitch Hedberg joke?

santa fe is like 'little san francisco' , politically. a very divided high income / low income society, depsite the elite's fake attempts to make things better for the low income. there is a huge underground mexican population that provides service for the elite, segregation by choice of both parties. caught in the middle of this melee' are the spanish and indian descent people who lived in the city for 450 + years. 4 cultures pretty heavily divided. a beautiful place that has fairly harsh winters, a pretty blah music scene ( the elites can't be bothered to attend gigs of lowlife locals), and one of the highest cost of living numbers in the country. my family is from there, i went to high school there and i wouldn't live there again if it was the last city in the US.

Pretty succinct summary there, Joe! I spent a week or so in Santa Fe once on a drive through New Mexico and really enjoyed my time as a tourist but could definitely see the social divide Joe's talking about. It is beautiful though.

No, but it could be, I suppose. It does seem like watered down Steven Wright.

Well, at least it's got one good thing going for it.

Yeah, definitely Steven Wright.

Real talk.
This is good info, it will be used wisely.
I can't stop smirking.
I'm a little disappointed, though, I've never lived in the desert before and want to know what it's like.
If you have anymore to give please don't hesitate to add to it.

I'm from there! Best food in the world. If you end up moving there, PM me for recommendations. Joe is spot on with his comments, but conversely, I think I will likely end up in Santa Fe. The bizzaro culture is just so much part of my identity... but maybe that's just the green chile talking.
The music scene has been off and on there. The youth scene seems to be in a lull, but it was very vibrant when I was growing up - a lot of DIY shows. Bands would always come through and be surprised by the response from the kids, and the quirky places we would find for them to play. It was always kind of a mix between locals and College of Santa Fe/St. John's kids. There have been some legendary crust punk bands to come from there a little before my time like Word Salad and Logical Nonsense. Needless to say, there is a lot blues bar stuff happening, but I never paid attention to any of that. One thing I really took for granted was all the native death metal bands that would come to town to play from the nearby reservations. Looking back, those kids were just phenomenal shredders.
I can imagine it would be a really fun place to live for a couple years. And don't worry, you can always go 50 minutes south to the 'big' city, Albuquerque. Lots of stuff to do there.

Haha, and Santa Fe gets extra weird because celebrities flock there... randomly I have built a snowboard jump with Woody Harrleson and his son, ice skated next to Val Kilmer, watched Cuba Gooding Jr. do karaoke, etc. My dad was on a lunch break a couple months at a pizza place, and started talking to this random guy. Turns out it was the writer Game of Thrones! My dad had never heard of the show/books, of course. The writer (George R.R. Martin), had just bought a little movie theater nearby, and now him and my dad eat lunch together sometimes. My dad still doesn't really fully understand who this guy is. Haha.
