Is anyone on the board a chippy or hand dandy woodworker?

ive always wanted to take up hobbyist woodworking but lets just say i have zip experience.... and it was a long long time since i did woodshop in hike skool
any tips? on whats some good starter esq shop kit and maybe beginner projects


im not out to be like super pro and build a house
i just wanna build like a shelf for crap storage and just be self sufficient
improve my man skills by 20% 30hp

But anyway, there might be some free classes offered in yr area. Like the hardware stores here have free lessons on certain days where you can go learn how to repair/build stuff.

I think a good first project to get into woodworking and also feed the gear head in you would be to make a speaker cab. Either a 1x12 or 2x12. You could make each corner a different joint to give you practice at each--one could be a miter joint, one could be a butt joint, one lap joint, etc....You'll need a jig saw, table saw or circular saw, drill, glue, screws and tolex or stain and finish. There are lots of plans and tutorials online too....

The first tool you should have is a table saw. That's the most useful saw. Also the scariest. Read up on safety and stuff. I do 90% of my woodworking stuff with just a table saw, some clamps, and 23 & 18 gauge nail guns (which also require an air compressor). Then you need the obvious glue and nails and screws and junk. Also a drill, in case you need to countersink or do pilot holes for screws, etc.

A good first project is a table saw sled. It's easy, and lets you make super clean cross cuts. Then use your new skillz to make a pedal board or something.

A router with a router table are also super handy for a bazillion things. And sanders. And a planer. And, and, and. You get the point. It gets expensive.

Routers are life-changing.

i just picked one up on craigs for $100
i started out in building construction
and spend most of my waking life in it
so a miter saw is a must for me
you guys that do alot of finer stuff
do you cut most of that by hand?

The guy who taught me all about wood working told me after his years running a wood shop, he thought he could do about 90% of what he needed to do with a good handsaw [japanese kind of saw] and a router.

Also, Craigslist is really your friend here. You can score an older cabinet saw [heavy base, big slab of steel for a bed] like a Delta for so much less than the same saw would go for new.
