Why do my messages go to my outbox when I try to reply to a PM?

They go to your outbox until the other person reads them. You can still edit it as long as its in there.

really? it doesn't always happen, many times they go straight to sent.

That PM button below the user avatar is just for pming from the thread you are in... If you send any kind of message it will sit in your outbox until that person reads it...
