Its getting time to look for a new car, my current 00 Explorer has 194 thousand on it. I no longer really need something super off roady but i do live on a dirt road in snow country(North Idaho).
It doesnt have to be new at all, id like to keep it under 7 grand so i dont have a huge car payment. Id like it to be fun to drive, i love the explorer but its practical not fun, and get above 25mpg. It doesnt have to lug equipment or more than 2 people most the time.
Off the top of my head im thinking older Impreza WRX's and Eagle Talons, what else should i look at?

Subaru. Always Subaru.
They last forever, can take pretty much anything you fucking throw at them, and they've saved my life. Twice.

My bandmate had a 2001 WRX that took us all around hell and back and never broke down. He ended up trading it in last year with over 200K miles on it. It's a great car.

To be honest i usually shy away from older Bmw and Mercedes sorts of stuff because its usally far more expensive to fix than the average car

I drive an older Merc 300 and it's been quite cheap/easy to work on.

Gas, the only thing that gives me fits is the speaker wiring in that car and how it all goes through a weak ass fader in the console.

Hmm....belive it or not there is 300 diesel in my area for super cheap, not AWD but i always wondered about them. What sort of gas mileage do you get out of it?

Average 27 with gas, no clue what kind of mileage to expect with the diesel. Do your homework on it though, if it hasn't been properly maintained you could have a bunch of stuff to fix. I got mine from my grandfather's dealership so everything had been checked out before hand.

I have a Toyota Matrix.
I have the XRS, not the AWD.
But I tried the AWD and it was great.

IMO, can't go wrong with an older Audi. Prices on used ones are relatively depressed for unknown reasons, so you can usually get fantastic deals on great cars that don't have the rep they deserve for how reliable and generally excellent they are.
