YMMV

Or if you're less into the "touchy feely" part of internet reviews

Here's an alternative, I haven't used it but they seem to go against some of Tunecore's practices. It sounds good, but again YMMV

I think getting your stuff up for sale on amazon music is pretty easy also.

I used Tunecore and hated it. For the volume we sold on iTunes (read: not much), the annual fees wiped out any small money we earned. I am a total Bandcamp fanboi - it's simple, it works, they only take a percentage of sales, and they take less of a cut than anyone else. Plus they're working on their "new music discovery" options, which is more than I can say for most other platforms I've seen.

nice! thanks guys!

i wasn't sure if it was something that took LOADS of legwork out of doing stuff i have no idea how to do, or sucks up money for simple diy things i should stop being a whiny bitch about and learn to do.

urm. does Bandcamp let you use any payment service you want? i fucking HATE paypal, and don't want to have anything to do with them if possible.

theres better digital publishers out there. tune core and cdbaby are probably the biggest most recognizable ones.

i can't find any of the websites we looked at. but we just googled it and went from there. some are more upfront about their fees then others. and some charge u for extra shit so their advertised price isn't actually what it is (like renewal fees to keep your album up their each year, etc).. there was one even that had a membership fee!

also u wanna look carefully at who they distribute to and where. for example, almost all places put u on iTunes, but some don't actually put u on iTunes worldwide, only in select countries or just the US, stuff like that.

this is the one we ended up going w/
http://www.catapultdistribution.com/features.html

bandcamp is all paypal. most things give u your money thru paypal tho dude. its pretty standard so theres really no jerking around on your PP account i would say.

i.... got FUCKED by paypal for a thousand dollars like 7 or 8 years ago. sold a Machine Drum, guy said he never got it and got his money refunded, i had the confirmation that it was signed for by him from UPS or FedEx (i forget which), showing that to paypal meant nothing. they still occasionally go after me for that money i "owe" them.

soooooo.... i'd rather put up a BandCamp page with a link to our site and use a straight credit card service there than use those evil fuckers. if at all possible.

plus, ever few months i have friends that rely on paypal transactions for their business tell me about paypal holding their money for some reason.... i just don't trust them. or like them. would LOVE to avoid them totally if i can.

Like everything to do with anything publishing, most of these guys do things that you could just do yourself, but it's often easier to go through a third party. For example, you can upload your own music to iTunes... but you gotta do it through this list:
https://itunesconnect.apple.com/WebObje ... a/wa/apply
And that's a pain in the ass and takes time--two things most musos are super bad at plowing through.

Much easier to farm that out to one of their aggregators:
https://itunesconnect.apple.com/WebObje ... ccTypeId=3

Outside of itunes, Go bandcamp. And, unfortunately, you're probably going to have to embrace Paypal. 99% of people who buy music on the internet from places that aren't iTunes want to use paypal. Buying music from bandcamp through paypal is easy, and if I've wandered onto the bloodparty bandcamp because I'm lurking ILF I don't want to have buying the album be any harder than it needs to be.

sigh. stop making things i don't want to do the more sensible option.

IT'S LIKE DATING IN HIGH SCHOOL ALL OVER AGAIN.

ugh. fine. i'll have Paul set up a ppal under his name and open a bandy account and swap it for the one we're using now.

FINE.

*pouts*

*kicks rocks*

i'll check that aggregate site. thanks!

Think about it this way--every day, even in the free music 4 errybuddy era, people spend staggering amounts of money on shitty, awful, terrible music. Because it's easy. Because they can search a song up on iTunes or google a bandcamp and own a copy after two clicks.

You're just joining those other Ilfers fighting the good fight by putting music out there on those channels that isn't shitty.

I suggest also checking into specific Music Publishers that specialize in Syncronization Licenses, which are the ones that let you get your music on TV, and Movies. They actually pitch your stuff or at least make it available/searchable to people looking for music for other medias. Being instrumental currently really makes you guys ripe for making money like that, it could be on ESPN Sports Center or Skateboard stuff on Fuel or something bigger…
I have talked to a guy that makes a decent living this way.

Piggybacking on that, if you're getting into Synch stuff, you 100% should have your stuff on iTunes.
