Tips to not get sick

So I woke up this morning and I feel like I'm on the edge of a full-fledged bug :grumpy: . I hate being sick more than anything else. What do you guys do when you feel a cold/flu/etc coming on?

I guess I'm just going to buy some of that "first sign of a cold" medicine and hope for the best.

I was just curious to see if any else has any habits or anything for when they're sick.

Echinacea tea at the first symptom, with raw honey.

Drink lots of water, get a good night's sleep. One of my bosses swears by a spoonful of elderberry syrup in the morning if you're feeling pretty awful. He made me try it once. It seemed to help (plus it's delicious).

You can pick it up from hippie alt/medicine type stores, or you can make your own:

I don't seem to get sick as often as most of my friends. Oddly, I am the one who is on a heavy dose of immunosuppressants due to having ankylosing spondylitis. You would think I would be the sick one.
I attribute this to eating a wide variety of foods including seafood, lots of garlic, tomatoes, fruits, salads with lots of different veggies, olive and avacado oil, and I take vitamins to make sure I've got everything covered. Honey with tea, and I have a glass of wine before bed. I don't have any set regime for the diet, I just seek out diversity and if I can incorporate more ingredients into a dish, I do so.

Thanks for the suggestions dudes. I'm going to see if I can pick any of the suggested stuff up at work tonight.

I'm with ya there AxAxSxS, I rarely get sick but when I do, I just want to watch twin peaks and listen to boris with minimal light and no schoolwork.

You mean you don't want to do that normally?

Once you feel it coming on, there's nothing you can do to not get sick. Lots of fluids, lots of rest... duh. For me, I avoid medication that masks the symptoms because it allows me to carry on like I am not sick, and that extends the sickness.

My tip to not get sick is to exercise the most basic of hygiene: WASH YOUR HANDS.

- Every time you leave your house and return.
- Every time you go to the bathroom (using a busy public bathroom reveals that many people do not do this... disgusting).
- Every time you shake a hand (see bathroom above).
- AFTER you have ordered your food at a restaurant and have returned the menu, but BEFORE you touch your silverware or drinkware.
- Every time you touch something that someone who could have been sick might have touched, like the mail sitting in your mailbox or a package from UPS.
- Every time you use someone else's phone.
- If you take your phone into the bathroom, every time you touch your own phone. Also, clean your nasty phone.

Wash everything you eat that is in an openable package. Blueberries, strawberries, and other fruit. You never know if that pint of blueberries you bought was picked by someone who didn't have access to a proper bathroom. Or, you never know if someone stepped away from a urinal, walked out of the bathroom while texting, stuck their phone in their pocket, and opened up and sampled that pint of blueberries that you are about to eat raw without cleaning. Wash bananas, oranges, and other produce whose skin you do not eat, but are exposed to rats, mice, and other disease carriers while in shipment or storage.

I also avoid people who are visibly sick, especially children (nasty little things). If I see you and your sick kid in the grocery store, I walk away. I don't even want to breathe your disgusting air.

Use Grapefruit extract. Works great! I promise! Mix it with something like pomegranate juice though.

If I feel myself getting sick I simply say "SICKNESS BEGONE".

Someone already mentioned Vitamin C but I would also like to suggest Zinc. Awhile ago I bought a bottles of both Vitamin C and Zinc supplements and one of each per day at the slightest hint of a cold. It found it worked better than when I only took Vitamin C in the past. Plus, it's relatively inexpensive.

Also, lots and lots of fluids. Even if it's just water, doesn't necessarily have to be tea or juice all the time (but those are good too of course). Just keep drinking.

Try to get as much rest as possible too. Even if that means you take a day off from work when you're not fully sick yet, that day off up front can help you beat the cold faster than if you wait to take a day off when you can barely get out of bed.

Those are the things that seem to work best for me. I can get anywhere from 0-2 colds per year and when I get sick, I get sick bad. It can take me up to 2 weeks to beat a cold. That's why I've become so diligent in beating it up front, so I don't have to suffer. Other people get over colds in a day or two, not me. Doing what I described above helped me beat my last two suspected colds in a matter of 3 days or so and even during those days the symptoms were much less severe.

Good luck. I hate being sick.
