got a 96 mim p bass, which has been sitting in a closet since....96. it looks off-white, but after removing the huge tie-dye yin-yang sticker from the front of it, i now realize it used to be pure white, as i now have some big white squares on the body. my original intent was to strip off all the old paint anyways, and stain it dark, almost black.
has anyone done this and regretted it, and why?

also, recommendations on some pickups, plz? thx!

The only thing you might regret is the fact that the project will probably take longer than you think. After the paint is gone, by using stripper, heat gun, sanders or some combination thereof, you will have lot of sanding to do. Then staining. Then clear coat, more sanding, more clear coat, sanding and then buffing. It's not a fast process. Skipping steps and speeding through things will just leave you with a crappy looking bass. Do it right, and you'll have something original to be proud of.

Agree with deci Bill. If you can pick up a cheapo throwaway beater to practice on, I would do that. Patience is key. let everything dry completely before you sand. DONT RUSH!

As for pickups, I really dig the alumitones in my kramer which is a JP style setup. Skully got an extra set off me and seems to be digging them as well.

so i dove in, and started with strippers. no noticeable effect, so i used a heatgun. i know how to use heatguns, and how to work with wood, and have used both in my professions. went really good until a big piece of wood bubbled up on the front. so i got real bummed, threw some stuff, started sanding everything to just repaint, and then i realized its a really thin veneer holding a bunch of 2x4s thatre glued together. live and learn. soooooo imma paint it again, haha. probably black. then goooold.
