Sorry if this has been covered, I'm just curious about which bands use baritone guitar. Especially if its just a duo with drums and guitar. Or if its noisy. Like Lightning Bolt. I know it was used a lot in classic country (feel free to post any awesome examples of that too). Also, I know its probably used a lot in metal, which is fine, but also not what I'm looking for unless its like the forefront of melody. I'm just not too sure where to start for modern stuff.

Pretty much as soon as the set went electric for the first album there were a lot of baritones as well, or bass VI depending on your definition. Justin was using a Gretsch bass VI (forget the model name, sorry) and eventually had a lookalike made that was like an inch longer scale? Or had some super strong neck or something.

Dan Spack plays baritones in Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir.

I think Best Coast has a Baritone player?

If you like that, you should most def check out all of his albums. He played songs in that vein as Songs: Ohia, and then morphed into a band called Magnolia Electric Company..channeling neil young and crazy horse...then he did some solo as Jason Molina, then last year he died from living hard on the road. I cried, his albums have been such an important part of my life. Truly was a great musician.

Oh man, that's terrible to hear. It sounds like he did a whole lot and made a ton of great music.

Type-O yeah, I think Kenny even had a signature baritone. And it's still guitar even if it is lower

If you liked that clip, that's off an EP called Hecla & Griper. Right around when he started releasing albums instead of cassettes at shows. Impala was right around then and would be a great place to start and just go from there. He released one or two before that you might want to check out later. Or maybe jump ahead to Didn't it Rain. What Comes After the Blues and Hard to Love a Man by Magnolia Electric Company are three of my favorites. All of his albums are really really really finely crafted. I'd stay away from his latest/last releases until you've heard his early stuff.

He didn't have health care and tried to clean up from alcohol abuse, he disappeared for a couple years and no one outside his circle knew what was going on. The he popped back on the radar saying he was writing new material, released an album, and then died of organ failure.

We lost one of the greats.
