Help me build a (cheap) funeral doom rig

Hey guys, I don't play much funeral doom, I tend to play more fuzzier stuff like Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sabbath, etc. However, sometimes after work I just feel like blasting some doom funeral style.

I currently have an Orange Micro Terror and PPC1x12 cab, which has actually been very excellent for playing most of the things I want. However, I'm not quite sure it can handle funeral doom.

I usually use a Digitech Bad Monkey for dirt and lately the BAT Revelations. But I also have currently lying around: Swollen Pickle, EHX Metal Muff, Digitech Hot Head Distortion, Digitech Hardwire Tube Overdrive. I'm getting EHX Big Muff for Christmas.

I'm wondering if I can push the Micro Terror with the right pedal or pedals to get a funeral type dirge or if there is another pedal that will do the trick. Or if I will even have to look into another (inexpensive) amp.

My guitars are Gibson SG, Gibson Gothic Morte SG and Epiphone G-400. I figure I'm covered on the guitar part of the signal chain.

I don't listen to much Funeral beyond a little Esoteric, but I think My Dying Bridge uses PODs to record.

Unless you count Ocean or Grief.

I see what you did there.

I believe the old school funeral doom bands used rigs very similar to the old swedish death metal bands, set neck guitars into HM-2 into Marshalls or 5150's, but I'm not positive on that.

But seriously, what bands are "funeral doom?"

I think the biggest difference is that, like Astro's saying, they go for more of a traditional metal (i.e. post-Maiden non-Sabbathy) guitar tone, right?

My first reaction is "My Dying Bride" as far as funeral doom, but my knowledge of the genre pales in comparison to a few other members here.

Yeah MDB and Esoteric and Candlemass are the only ones I can come up with off the top.

Like I said boosted Marshalls or 5150's:

I think an HM-2 or clone there of would be a great place to start for you.

Off Topic: I saw an Ahab record, silently mouthed "for fans of Mastodon" and kept browsing.

Same thing with Mars Red Sky. I was just like "oh, ok, you like Sleep a lot. I probably don't have to listen to you."

I'm a shallow person.

hahaha Ahab is actually pretty cool.

Another funeral doom band: Bloody Panda. Reeeallly loose 'funeral doom' tag there, but I kind of group any doom band with a keyboard player as funeral doom?

Yeah, I mean, if Bloody Panda counts... they're totally fucking awesome.

Mournful Congregation is the pinnacle of funeral doom for me. Nothing tops the sorrow in those excruciating harmonized guitar lines. Easily the most powerful band I've witnessed live.

Loss is also fantastic, but their guitar sound is definitely not typical of the genre.

Sorry, but I guess I didn't really answer the OP at all. Mournful Congregation used a combo of Mesas and Marshalls...not exactly cheap.

Honestly, I'd worry more about the riffs than the rig.

If the volume and size of the amp isn't an issue, I'm sure you'll be able to do just fine with what you already have.
