Bass amp recs

I'm trying to help my bassist track down a good bass amp cuz his current set up is not cutting the mustard. I use a Beta Lead and if I play at what I consider the "right" volume he is pretty much inaudible.
I'm looking for something affordable and powerful. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
There are a couple Peaveys on craigslist near me. A Mark 3 and a Mark 4. Are these things any good?

Sunn / Fender 1200s. they go for around 5-600 and have 1200 SS watts and a bad ass preamp section. Plus it can power up to 4 cabs, or 2 ohms.

Yes, those Peaveys are bombproof and doomworthy and super cheap.
Be on the look out for some of the higher wattage solid state Ampegs, too.

Coo, thanks! Any opinion on which of those two Peaveys is better? Mark III vs Mark IV

I don't see that Mark IV but that Mark III for $250 is a great deal and would easily suffice... The 260H for $125 would work too but it's a lil better for Guitar...

old peavey's can bring a good bit of volume for very few dollars and you can throw them down a flight of stairs without hurting them. lots of people use those mark iv's and they don't sound bad. i don't think they sound outstanding most of the time personally, but it's not bad if you need a loud and reliable something just to be able to play some shows and practice. one of the best bang for the buck bass amps out there is the old acoustic 370. look for one. they're usually under $400 and sound phenomenal. it's worth far more than the price you can usually get one for. harder to find and a little more expensive than an old peavey, but worth it. what's his rig now? an upgrade in the cabinet can often make a huge difference too.

His current rig is a Genz Benz rack head, a 4x10 cab and a 1 x 15 cab. It's not a standard production model, its an older custom job and I have no idea what the specs are. He's borrowing it from a friend and was planning to buy it if it worked out.

Earlier the better so I'd say the mark 3, the later SS peaveys lost that lube like grind when cranked. Mark 8s were sterile as a unic.

Damn, I would've recommended the SWR SM-400, but its only 400watts. Its got THE TONE though.

at 400 watts it'll beat most other recommendations here, including the peaveys and the acoustic 370, which is loud as shit. should be able to keep up with a beta lead alright.
