seems weird to make a big deal of on the internet, but in a weird way, y'all are friends. i'm putting my dog, pancho, to sleep on wednesday. some will remember him from my old harmony central avatar. i think will is the only one who knows him in real life. he's 15 years old and has pretty much outlived his body. he's been my best buddy through pretty much all of my adult life and it feels like i'm cutting off my arm. but i've watched him decline for the past year or two and i know that now is a good time for him to bow out. doesn't make it easy, though. if you're inclined, raise a glass to old dogs and old friends. i know this will strike a chord with some of you.
this is him, with my other dog in the background, on our last really good day at the beach a while back. same day my avatar photo was taken of the other dog.

Dude...
Sorry to hear you've got to say goodbye. Dogs are probably the best creatures on earth. They love us unconditionally even though humans are colossal shitheads. I will definitely raise a glass (and maybe pour out some of a 40) to you and your pup.

Sorry to hear that he's on the way out. That's rough. I'm glad that his suffering might be done, as I've had 2 grandparents pass in the last year; they had deteriorated to a really shitty place and it was comforting to know that it had ended.

Definitely will tip a 40 for Pancho, dude. Dogs are amazing, can't wait to have one.

My condolences Parker. It's been rough having my mom cat sit for me for two weeks, I can't imagine losing him forever. I feel for you. Atleast he will no longer be in pain my friend.

That is a bummer man. Pets are like family and are more loyal and trustworthy than people are. I don't drink, but I will pour out some of my juice for him. Keep your head up man.

Sorry to hear you'll have to say goodbye. It is a big deal - thanks for sharing. We had to say goodbye to two of our hounds, in the past two years. Relationships with our pets are often-times deeper and more meaningful than with most people. Sorry, man.

Parker, I'm so sorry to hear this. Pancho sounds like an awesome dog and I'm truly sad I never got a chance to meet him. It always saddens me to hear about losing a companion, friend, and pet, and this is always such a hard resolution to come to. I still have wonderful, if difficult, memories of my old dogs, and I know that you will always have great, fond memories of Pancho. I'll definitely raise a glass tonight to great, old friends, especially Pancho.

So sad to hear, what did your old sig say? something like "this is my dog, he's old and he's mean and he'll probably bite you" Always made me smile. I'll definately pour one out for Pancho Weds night. At least you have a few last days to spoil the crap out of him.

Mate this is really sad. I went through a similar thing when I was in my teens, but can only imagine that as an adult it would so much harder to deal with. You know you've made the right decision and you can rest knowing that he won't be going through any more pain of old age.
Take care of yourself...glass raised.

thanks everyone. it's nice to have the kind words. we had a bbq last night where we invited lots of old friends who've known pancho through the years and old roomates over to hang out and give him treats and have a chance to say goodbye. i made him a steak and everyone spoiled him and it was really nice. he was pretty stoked. he has a lot of friends and fans. the next few days are going to be really hard but it's good to have a bunch of support. i feel lucky that he was still able to enjoy that.

close, it was "that's my dog. he's old, he rules, and he will probably bite you." he's not actually mean. he's a good dog, he just never was one you wanted to trifle with. he was always willing to back up his bark with some bite if needed. and sometimes he made mistakes and bit my friends before he got to know them.
