sooooo... i have this sweet musicmaster bass i got a few years back for next to nothing. the catch? somebody rigged up a tuner to it. so i've been on the hunt for a replacement and it hasn't been easy to find another. it's not the older smaller style tuner which seem easy enough to find.

...which brings me to my main point, anybody know what kind of tuners would fit without modification? or does somebody have an extra?
(here's some shitty phone pics so you can see what i'm up against.)

Off the top of my head Fender was either making their own tuners at that point or they had the made to their specs. You could try to see if the current mustang bass tuners are accurate repros but more than likely ebay is your best bet....or finding and paying a machine shop to modify the newer one. It looks like the post is just longer but that could just be the pics.
ORRRRRR buy a complete set of the earlier tuners and have a matching, though incorrect, set.

Schaller was making tuners for Fender at that time, i think.

i have been scouring ebay but everytime a single tuner shows up the bid goes crazy. i'm not opposed to buying a whole new set either... whatever drops in and gets the job done. it's my only bass so it gets a lot of play and i don't really care about resale.

from what i can tell the replacement tuner's base is a tad too big so it wouldn't bolt down. so they decided to rig it half on? :erm:

edit: updated the shitty pic with two slighty less shitty ones.

Schaller sells individual tuners on their website: see if any of these work.

Musicmaster tuners are odd. The later ones have the normal fender hole size but the back plate is smaller then the standard fender type tuner. I know for a fact new mustang tuners will not fit. I don't have one on hand or I'd check for you but I "think" it's very similar to what gibson is using on their sg basses.

so i was a little bit patient and i scored an original for $20. just showed up today and it went on no problem!

here's a comparison between the original MM tuners and the one that was hack jobbed on. only one side was actually screwed down. :picard:

finally a shot of it back to former glory. now that the tuner's fixed i'm contemplating something like an aero musicmasterer pickup and a set of flatwounds. any other pickups/string sets i should check out?

Awesomes.

I've been meaning to throw some Pyramid flats on my bass. I've haven't had the cash to do so yet.
