it does seem that the French police are perhaps gilding the lily a bit. given Varg's past it's difficult to give him benefit of the doubt, but France also put Tim Blake of Gong and Hawkwind on a sentence of 18 months' house arrest because when another driver, who was drunk, crossed the center line and hit him head-on Tim had a trace amount of cannabis in his system...after Tim died in the helicopter on the way to the hospital and was revived. France also still operates under the Napoleonic Code, which requires the suspect to prove his innocence rather than the Anglo-American presumption of innocence, so i'm a little dubious about French legal proceedings especially when they're aimed at residents of France from other countries.

Also if youre one of those people who doesnt listen to certain black metal bands because of their political/social beliefs youre missing the point. Black metal is about hate, no matter how you slice the pie its always going to be that way. Black metal has less to do with the instrumentation as it does the ideology. Whats great about it is it isnt necessarily restrictive within those boundaries. It doesnt matter who or what you are, as long as youve got hate in your heart, youre playing black metal. You cant sit back and say "i like this band because they hate christians but i dont like this band because they hate jews". Thats fucking idiotic. Its like saying i dont like certain noise acts because they are misogynistic.

People really need to square with the fact that black metal isnt a nice thing. The progenetors were closed-minded, hateful, dangerous people. They burned down houses of worship, killed people because they were gay, and preached every manner of hatespeak imaginable. Being into black metal doesnt mean you have to accept the acts themselves but youre going to have to recognize that, in a genre based solely around hate, you are no different from them.

is this really the thing that makes you unable to like burzum? you were able to get past the murder, the burning of ancient cathedrals, the years of completely insane racist rants (like "white peoople are evolved from aliens that settled in antarctica" kind of crazy), and the atrocious prison era synth albums; but the purchase of a few .22 rifles puts it over the edge?

i mean, i love burzum, but i had to separate the music from the nut job that makes it in my head years ago in order to go on enjoying it. i certainly don't agree with his views, but i do find him interesting. there's little he could do at this point that would "ruin" the music if i've gotten this far.

also, i agree that this seems like pretty sensational journalism and questionable police work.

Some good points made here. I have nothing to add, save for Varg's a pretty vile, reprehensible dude. But Leadbelly wasn't exactly a nice guy either, and yet I could never dismiss his music based on that. Same goes for Italian Renaissance choral composer Gesualdo. He's like the OJ Simpson of Chant/Polyphony. Killed his wife and her lover, got off scott-free. If you're unable to separate the guy and his exploits from the music, then that's ok. The article may in fact be a bit suspect, but a kernel of truth... I get not wanting to listen to him for moral/ethical reasons, though. And I think that's kind of sweet. You got a good heart, HT. Carry on.
