Moving from NZ to Washington DC

I'm moving to Washington DC in August for several years with time on my hands. I have searched online, but found bugger all in terms of guitar shops, or venues (noise/punk/hardcore/industrial-anything loud and heavy) there. A good luthier & tube amp servicer would be bonus as well.
Any ILF recommendations?

There is a HUGE noise scene between Fairfax and DC, and DC itself has the Sonic Circuits festival which is pretty large. I know some dudes who are getting minimal darkwave and electronic stuff going as well! When you get over here just keep an eye out, I'm sure you will be able to find something good

there's a bunch of venues down in the DC area. the best punk / hardcore shows ive been to down there recently have been in basements, barns, houses outside of DC though. Once you get here, i'm sure you'll find it.

As for gear, a couple places you may want to check out are Atomic Music and Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center.

I was going to ask the related question "what brings you to Washington?" work, school, infiltration?

I won't comment on the latter as any joke might well be taken seriously given the land I'm heading to.

My wife has secured a NZ diplomatic job there and I believe the term for me being there is: "kept man"

Let me know when your here and I can give you the royal tour!
But to answer your questions here's my top three of each:
Guitar Shops
1) Atomic Music
http://www.atomicmusic.com <- used gear heaven
2) Action Music
http://www.actionguitar.com <- boutique gear heaven
3) Chuck Levins
http://www.chucklevins.com <- mainstream and touring gear heaven
Venues:
1) Black Cat DC
http://www.blackcatdc.com2) 9:30 Club
http://www.930.com3) Rock N Roll Hotel
http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com4) The entire U street corridor, its hard to explain but once your here you'll understand as there's literally 30 different venues on this street. But the ones to check out are Velvet Lounge, DC9 and the U ST Music Hall.
As far as guitar and luthier repair all three of the guitar stores I have listed have repair shops inside them. I personally would recommend Action Music for both guitar and tube amp repair, but depending on what your looking to have done I do guitar setups, pickup installs, hardware changes, assembly, etc.
Welcome to the Asshole of America.
