Misconceptions about shipping USPS to Hawaii and Alaska

There's a pretty large misconception about shipping to Hawaii and Alaska that I want to clear up. Shipping via USPS to Hawaii and Alaska does NOT cost extra. USPS uses zoning when determining pricing of shipping and we are basically in the same zone as California. Example: if you are in New York, shipping to Hawaii and Alaska is zone 8, same as California. If youre in Cali, its cheaper to send to Hawaii than to New York. Zone 8 is the farthest distance you can ship nationally ad the zone number goes down the closer you get to your location. Shipping in flat rate priority is always the same too. Never extra. I'm pretty sure flat rate priority is the most common way I've sent and received pedals anyway. I'm tired of people saying CONUS only when they ship USPS. I see this on eBay and online stores all the time. Hopefully my fellow country men and women learned something and will stop with the CONUS. It's tiring to have to explain this every single time and have them still be wary and sometimes still turn me down.

How FEDEX and UPS work, I'm not sure, I've rarely used them. It's usually more expensive in my experience.

Thanks for reading! :ilf:

Yeah, when I was in CA it would cost me like $5 to ship to Alaska with USPS. When I say CONUS in my ads I actually just mean US. I should probably stop doing that.

UPS only offers 2nd day air to Hawaii I'm pretty sure, which is crazy money.

I shipped a pedal to Guam a while back. It was the about the same US price as normal I believe. Less then Canada and I live in a State that borders it. Like Hawaii and Alaska it's more of a time thing I believe.

True. Guam is a US territory. Works with the same zoning rules.

I ship worldwide homie. I usually lose a little $$$ doing so because I can never get an accurate quote. I shipped to a guy in Budapest not too long ago, cost $30 to ship and I only charged him $20. I think it's pretty outrageous what musicians friend and the like charge for international. Musicians friends only ships 2 day air here to Hawaii. I almost had to pay $80 to ship a turntable but I bitched to customer service and they cut it in half...plus a price match!

I think this should be a shipping advice column thread. Kinda like "Dear Abby", but only for shipping questions.
