Cab project

I plan on building a guitar cab this summer with my grandpa, he has built a couple simpler cabs, and repairing equip etc, but I am thinking something more along the lines of orange/emperor style. Would 10x12 be a cool combo? I Reall like the 10's in my super, and I think I may use it for some bass or baritone, but not enough to justify a 15. Have any of you built cabs, did you find any useful guides? Did you run into any really unexpected things?

A cab project is a really good way to get wicked sound for bargain prices. You can focus you investment on speakers instead of paying some guy to tolex a plywood box. However you gotta be careful when choosing speakers, make sure you get the right impedance, and if you decide to mix make sure they don't phase each other out. My advice is to screw 10" and 12" and build a straight up 2X12"... then later a 4X10". I had a really good experience with Warehouse speakers and they offer plenty of tips on mixing speakers. As for the cab itself, the key is to make a solid baffle and back panel. Personally I like em closed back and make it as rigid as possible to bring out the lows. MDF (at least 3/4") it really the best stuff for baffles it is stable and stiff. I used solid 7/8" pine for the sides and splined the joints. Oh yeah don't cut corners on the mounting hardware, get some proper t nuts. Last pice of advice, used clips to wire the speaker tabs, so you change the impedance or swap speakers easily, but solder the clips on don't be lazy and just crimp them.

Thanks for all the input. The reason I was thinking 10x12 is because I already have a 2x12 for my bassman, and a 4x10 in my super.

As long as they have around the same wattage rating you should be okay using just a single 10" speaker and just a single 12" speaker. Just look at Shellac and Steve's mismatched drivers. Speaker diversity is awesome!

A 10X12! damn that would be massive. posting.php?mode=quote&f=192&p=575205#

But it sounds like you gots the 12" and 10" covered now you need some 15". Just sayin'.
I mean everyone needs a 15" in their life. Right?

A 10" with 12" is definitely interesting, but a set of 15"ers is a force.

errr I was high, obviously not 10x12 :grumpy:

I do also have a "15 for my bass rig haha. Not a huge fan of my guitar through it however, and I typically only really like the "15 when it is paired with another 4x10.

Just bustin your chops a little.....but seriously a 10X12" behemoth would be intense....like a giant prehistoric monolith.

A 10" & 12" is a great idea. 10" on top 12' on bottom.....?Can't wait to see what you come up with. Be sure to check out the Warehouse site.
