Why do you play bass/guitar (I'm assuming those instruments, since this is an fx forum, but if you're drummer or whatever post on...) rather than sax/drums/cello/etc?

i'd guess with everyone it's either because of the type(s) of music they're into or their parents got them started playing something they do when they were young.

i play guitar/bass, drums & keys, suck at violin and trumpet and am still an amateur with my harmonicas, but i love playing all of those just because they're used in music i enjoy.

Guitar because of Neil Young, basically. Love making noises and generally the sound of guitar.

Bass because of what achtane said.

Double bass because it's the most fun instrument to play ever, and it sounds sooooo nice.

If I'd been born earlier, it may've been accordion or banjo or some other instrument popular at that time.

I started playing guitar when I was like 11 because JimmyPageJimiHendrixPeteTownsendDaveGilmourJamesHetfieldandafuckloadmoredudes. Then in college I switched to bass because every fucking guy I met was a guitarist looking for a bassist.

Unlike Achtane, I only really got into bass when I realized that it didn't HAVE to be a support role. My bass is the lead in my band, and even in my covers band, we play a ton of songs where the bass is at least as (if not more) prominent than the guitar.

In the last few years, I've started getting more and more into synth because there's so many more tones that I can't get on a bass or guitar, no matter what effects I use.
