Wanna Learn Theory?

So, I realized that I'm not the only person looking to either learn or refresh their knowledge of music theory.

Most of ILF seems to be self taught, though, so the approaches that most music theory books take seems foreign and hard to relate to (at least they do for me).

So, I present to ILF, the book that helped me learn all the theory I forgot after highschool:

The Guide Formerly Known As Ravenspiral

This is the most approachable, and easy to comprehend music theory book I've ever found. It's written for piano, but it isn't very hard to translate to guitar. I highly suggest it to anyone that wants to learn theory, or wants to refresh themselves.

Naw, I don't. I'm just dandy being shy of having a completely competent understanding of modes.

I'm gonna try to read this. I feel like I'm lacking so much intuitive music knowledge and theory-based music knowledge.. It's amazing I can hold my guitar at all :(

Thanks IEatCats! :thumb:

You're welcome, everyone :D

I've set one of my resolutions to spend 30 minutes-an hour a day relearning theory as intricately as I used to. If anyone wants a study buddy, or someone to talk theory with if they don't get something (doubtful, this pdf is amazing about explaining concepts), I'd love to chat about it :)

Don't be scared of theory. You will still be able to play music with your friends the same way you always have. It will be okay. In fact you will be able to play with others easier and be better at it.

Learn the rules of theory, and then break them.

Thanks that looks pretty good.
Another good one is Edly's Music Theory for Practical People -- I actually managed to learn a few things from that one without falling asleep in the middle.

You must unlearn what you have learned...

I read the book that IEatCats posted this morning over coffee for about an hour and really dug it. I don't need the "scales are a sequence of notes, not fucking climbing a mountain" overly-simple definitions combined with crude humor, but that's just me -- beginners probably enjoy the author's light tone. :idk: I liked it! :thumb: and will continue to read it.
