ok so the day before I was about to go pick up an old portastudio some asshole bought it

I was kinda lookin forward to getting that because it's well, a portable studio. all the junk needed to record in one package.

but now I need to look for something else


so just a 4 track mixer into a cassette deck? how does this shit work?

Shoot for another portastudio. I use a 414 mkII and I absolutely love it. It's just easy. I also use mine as a mixer, plug multiple intruments straight in and out to amp...or headphones. I've used digital 4/8 track recorders and digital/computer recording, but cassette is by far my favorite.

My old band used to just run a mixer into a cassette deck. Worked fine. Kind of a pain in the ass, because you have to play, then listen, then adjust volumes, mic placement, etc... rinse, repeat, until it sounds how you want it to. Once you get it, it's fine though. Far as actually recording to cassette, as a medium, just watch your levels, unless you want it to be blown out and distorted. Also, fuck noise reduction. If you're playing anything even remotely loud, you'll get it up above the hiss anyway.

That'll give you 2 tracks a L and R... A real 4 track splits the tape into 4 sections and lets you record on all 4... With a 4 track mixer into a regular cassette deck you will be able to get a good mix of the 4 tracks but it will only record onto the Left and Right tracks that a standard deck allows... Make sense???
