i picked up an old set on ebay and don't see how the hell they mount. they aren't threaded... can snap a pic when i get home tonight if that'll help. i just picked up a set of screws & nuts that'll fit it but that seems pretty odd / awkward...

Cover has two holes -- put some foam or weather stripping (more springy) on the bottom of the pickups, screws go through either side of the cover and into the body. The only thing the screw does is hold the pickup down via the head.
Wait, did you get a set that doesn't have covers or something?

wait they mount to the body / held down by the pickguard instead of being of adjustable height like all my geetarz? as in the screws go through the pickguard then the pickups and into the wood of the body?

Well, the foam/stripping/whatever underneath the pickups lets you adjust the height; back out the screws and the pickup will raise, turn them clockwise and it will lower. But yeah. The only thing keeping the pickups from falling out of the body hilariously are the screws mounted directly into the wood.

The pickguard is a non-issue since the pickups should fall through it into their own cavity.

i've only dissembled & reassembled a bass once in my life & that was a peavey for a paintjob over a decade ago. this one i've assembled piece by piece. will share a pic soon! (aside from the squier neck it's pretty damn hot IMO...)

all set & works right on the first try w/ wiring help from skullservant! (pickups had two wires each, green & white, red & black, wasn't sure which was which.)

i'll snap a couple closeups of its body tomorrow - the wood grain is awesome. so much more defined after coating.
