You ever get that feeling......

That you wanna sell all your gear and start over from scratch because you're tired of obsessing over tone-searching instead of just writing music?

I think with the amount of options people have nowadays regarding gear it can get overwhelming... Even 10 years ago it wasn't this segmented and it seems people think they need to acquire a certain pedal or amp or guitar or bass or keyboard in order to be worthwhile... I must be lucky or dumb but I've never really bought something thinking I was going to use it for a specific purpose and then been disappointed or miffed when I played it... Most of the gear I love the most is stuff I just saw for a good price and knew would work for me so I got it... I see some of my friends buy gear (music, computer, car, whatever) because it's new or cool or the thing and they end up mad with it because they are trying to force it to doing something it wasn't intended or designed to do or they didn't understand it in the first place and then talk smack about it like the gear did it... It's part of our consumer culture to always be wanting the next...

Look at the iphone 5 sales, do you REALLY need it cause the 4gs turned to suck overnight or just cause it's new???

It wasn't a matter of selling everything for me, but selling and trading pedals to try new ones before coming to the realization that what I was looking for is what I had originally

This^^^^

When I'm not playing noise/doom, I think I'd prefer good old amp distortion. Problem is that all the ones I like the sound of are very pricey (Fryette!). Most but not all of the guitar tones I love I think fall into amp overdrive, or at least a more natural overdrive sound. Try and get a chance to talk to a musician you think has some cool shit, and they usually use cheap shit, or at least simple shit.

best example for me is Lightning Bolt. yeah, he uses 4 or 5 cabs, but it's all power amps and his board is SIMPLE. only thing sort of expensive is the Bass Wah. and his tone CRUSHES. so much goodness.

i've thought about going simpler, and have tried that, but i love my bass and i'm happy with my preamp and cabs.

Nope. I don't try to stress about it too much.

No money, nothing to sell, mostly satisfied with setup = NO GAS
I would like to have the willpower to practice more than any piece of equipment right now. My personality is such that when I feel like my playing is mediocre, instead of being driven to practice, I just get apathetic about it. Gotta change that jank.

I like having a lot of stuff to choose from but having a small board helps me focus in on playing. Rig evolution is always good.
Sometimes I want to sell half of my rig. Just to fund other things though.

Yeah, the tone search isn't stopping. It's just a pain in the ass when I want to have one basic guitar tone for an EP or something, and I can't make up my damn mind. Having a crazy rig is awesome, and super fun for noise and experimentation, but I still want my "holy grail" you know?
