Truly saddening news. I can't help but be in awe of the moon landing, even having been born decades afterward.

It's amazing what the Apollo program did with the technology of the day. Apollo 11 had less computing power than a pocket calculator (not a graphing one, a cheapie). And now that we have the chance to be the first generation of humans ever to go to Mars and beyond, and to do to it more safely and more cost-effectively...nobody cares. Not to mention that no one born since 1935 has been to the moon in the 43 years since. I just don't get it.

because people just don't see the benefit of these kinds of things anymore...everyone should be required to read this letter from Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger:

And to all the naysayers ... NASA's entire 50 year budget is less than the bank bailout.
And probably about 15 minutes of bombing the shit out of brown people in countries most of your citizens would be unable to find on a map.

I remember seeing stats somewhere that it would only take one half of one percent of the DOJ's annual budget to send a manned mission to Mars. I think Murrica needs to rethink our priorities.

Don't say that reality shows never did anything for you.

RIP to not only a great pioneer in space, but a fantastic athlete and a wonderful trumpet player. I'm truly stunned the man was able to do it all.
