DL4 or Hazarei? Or...

So I think I need a digital delay and I'm pretty sure I need a looper. I want to be able to loop live comfortably, uncomplicatedly. ANd I'm looking for some flexible delay (have analog delay covered). It seems like the best options are a used DL4 or maybe a SMM+H. Which do you recommend, or are there others that are better? Oh and not an arm and a leg preferable.

Cheers ILF!

this, far better constructed than the DL4 and way more options than the SMMH

You might also consider the Boss DD-20. It has most of the same features, just in a typical Boss package. I liked it more than the DL4.
In all honesty, the DL4 has terrible switches and the power supply is kind of a hassle. You could get it modded if you have the money sitting around. Although at that price you might as well get a Timeline.
For the record, I don't have experience with the DelayLab or SMM+H. Good luck though.

I love the DL-4, but its looping options are limited. You can get a good 28 seconds out of it if you put it on 1/2 time and then play it at regular speed (14 seconds on regular time), and the delay sounds are great... but the Vox Delay Lab seems to have topped it with looping and features. The SMMH is already, but it's reeaaaallly clean and digital sounding, and you have to hold down the looper while you're recording. Sounds good, but not great for live jams.

Even though I haven't tried it I'd go with the Vox DelayLab, which I think MaxMaps is selling in B/S/T. If I were buying a multi-purpose delay/looper right now, I'd certainly go with that.

An Akai Headrush might fit. Fewer bells and whistles, but probably available cheaper if one comes up used. People seem to be happier with its looper than a lot of other affordable pedals.

The M9 is worth it as a delay/verb/looper alone. Same footprint as the DL-4.

The looper is laid out much like the DL-4 but has twice as much time and the half time/reverse functions now get their own buttons. You can enter/exit looper mode with your foot instead of reaching down and turning the knob like on the DL-4. And when you enter looper mode, your effects stay on and you can exit looper mode while the loop is still playing if you want to turn any effects on/off. You can also choose if you want the looper to be pre/post fx.

All the same delays as the DL-4 and then some. But with the M9 you can have 3 on at once instead of 1 and 3 more ready to be recalled, not to mention the scene/folder layout is easy to switch with your feet on the fly for even more. You can actually choose the note value for your delays and sync them all on a global tap tempo. So say for example you have a dotted 16th for one delay, a straight quarter note on another and an 8th note triplet all going at once. Epic rhythmatic delay textures. Furthermore, you can use an expression pedal to control any and all parameters you choose.

The verbs are amazing, the modulation is great, filters are cool and even some of the comps/eqs/ect are usable. Supports MIDI. Stereo. The switches and overall build quality is a million times better than the DL-4 too.

More expensive, but I also agree with all of this. LOVE my M9.

M9+MIDI looper control is really hot.
On the other hand, the headrush seems to be used by pros quite often. And there's one in the BST right now.

And they don't seem to sit around long, so if you don't like it you can easily flip it and only eat shipping. :thumb:

Flashback is pretty awesome, but you can't use the delays and the looper at the same time. It does have a super easy to use 40 second loop function, though. And the the delays are pretty great.

I went from a DL-4 to M9 and loved my M9 so much that after a year and a half with it I moved up to an M13. I really can't hype the M series enough.

Gotta rep dat M9 son. Shit's amaze-balls for looping and delay/verb stuff. I don't really use anything else other than the Ring Mods and strange trems. oh and the occasional pitch shifting.

I use the FUCK out of my M9. But I tried a delay lab the other day and seriously considered getting rid of my M9 for it.
