anybody else fund it?

for those who don't know, the ouya is a console based on the android platform designed to be fully hackable - pull it apart, root it, doesn't matter - it won't void your warranty.

every game in the marketplace has to have at least a portion of the game available for free, but what's got me really excited is the fact that there is no cost to put it up in the marketplace. i believe every console comes with a dev kit, which means there is now zero cost to creating games for the ouya aside from the console itself. (to contrast, the xbox arcade/indie marketplace requires a $99 a year subscription, which isn't all that terrible, but there's still no guarantee your game will be hosted in the marketplace at all)

as someone who loves games, and wants to make them eventually, i really hope this takes off.

any thoughts?

I think it could either be very, very good, or disastrous.

If there's a bit of a filter on the marketplace, it'll be good. If they're going with the "free marketplace for all" model, you'll be sifting through all the shit that just isn't any good - which will make it frustrating.

There already exists a similar device that I'e heard about that was based on a linux operating system, but I don't think it ever took off. I wish I could remember the name.

It looks cool. I wanted to get in on the kickstarter, but didn't have the funds...
What tier did you spring for?

I thought about backing it, but decided to wait to see what it does first. If it starts going well, then I'll get one and develop for it as well.

I don't think it's gonna last. Flash/phone/Indie games will only be able to carry it so far, and I doubt it's gonna be able to keep up with the current or next generation of consoles.
As a $100 emulator it'll be sweet, as long as you don't already have a PSP or half-decent PC. If I had the money to spend on it, I'd get it just for the ability to run any pre-PS2 game on the TV conveniently.

That reason alone is what will keep them in business.

The kickstarter has met over 9x the original goal!

Really cool idea too...

the hope is to get support beyond the traditional 'phone' game.

the final fantasy III remake was announced as a launch title, and they're in talks with namco bandai, so hopefully they get some major developer support.

if not, at least i can play snes/gba/etc games on it i guess :)*

Going by the hardware specs, it'll likely be able to handle Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox games with ease via emulators. I know an iPhone can do it, and the Tegra chip the Ouya has in it is a bit stronger than the graphics processor in an iPhone 4S or iPad 3 - Though it consumes far more power, and Apple likes making their own processor systems anymore.

And since it's so hacker-friendly, I think we'll see emulators for it from like...day one.

I'm really hoping that developers move away from the mobile game design of it. It's the easy way to get on the platform, but at the same time, it will hinder the growth. Just like if Apple were to announce an Apple TV with app+game capabilities, you'd have all the shitty apps, and the 487,235 tower defense games to wade through to find the few cool games and apps.
