yosu. i'm super ig'nant about mics and most recording things......

whilst setting up to record 7 mics on a drumset into a Motu 828, a Shure Beta52 i have that was working fine, suddenly started sounding super tinny and no low end at ALL... i noticed i had the 48 volt switch up..... did i kill it? did i kill it for another reason? or are you not s'posed to have the volt switch up on mics that don't need it?

im pretty sure the reason its called "phantom" power is that mics that dont need it are not affected by it.

With phantom power, the supply voltage is effectively invisible to balanced microphones that do not use it, which includes most dynamic microphones. A balanced signal consists only of the differences in voltage between two signal lines; phantom powering places the same DC voltage on both signal lines of a balanced connection. This is in marked contrast to another, slightly earlier method of powering known as "parallel powering" or "T-powering" (from the German term Tonaderspeisung), in which DC was overlaid directly onto the signal in differential mode. Connecting a conventional microphone to an input that had parallel powering enabled could very well damage the microphone.

that said not sure why it is not working.

huh. that's what i THOUGHT, that mics that didn't need power weren't going to be hurt by getting it, and mics that DO need power would be not be hurt by no power, they just wouldn't work.

thanks meng! that's reassuring. i pretty much just set it aside, grabbed a different kick mic and finished the session. was too bummed to do anything else. i might have been doing something funky in the software or with the cable or something. kinda freaked and just moved on.

i'll grab it and check it out more thoroughly next time i'm out there.

Yeah your fine... The capsule might be fucked but it's a 52 and you can replace it... Phantom Power won't hurt a non powered mic and in fact some people use it on as a "secret" recording technique... Phantom Power WILL fuck up a condenser mic if it is on before you plug the mic in so make sure to plug in mic then turn on Phantom...
