Italian horror/giallo/gore Appreciation

Suspiria is my favorite movie and I get so much shit for it from fellow horror fans. "It doesn't make sense" - yes I know it is a weak plot, but the images absorb me everytime I pop in the faded VHS. The atmosphere grabs me. I literally don't even have to listen to the dialogue but I do listen to the great Goblins soundtrack.

Also, I love argento's giallo movies like The bird with Crystal Plummage and the classic Profondo Rosso (deep red). Inferno is an underrated classic, too.

And how can you forget Lucio Fulci!!!! Zombie is my all-time favorite zombie movie. Slow-moving, creepyiness. SPLINTER IN THE EYE!!!!!!! and come on a Shark vs a zombie!!
Ahh the scummy, sleaziness beauty of the New York Ripper. Plus city of the living dead has probably my favorite on-screen death of all time.

What italian directors, scenes, movies, deaths do you love?

While I adore most Italian cinema, I really love Neorealism and Spaghetti Westerns and this movie:

Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Love it all! Saw Giallo the other night with Adrien Brody, and thought it was fucking awesome! The Mother of Tears in my favorite Argento though. Dunno why. A lot of people hate that one. Good thread man.

I personally hated mother of tears. I thought the cgi was horrible but to each his own! asia argento is pretty sexy though! By the way what is that flick you posted chankgeez? it reminds me of Django and El topo.

That's The Desert of the Tartars by Valerio Zurlini.

Yeah, it's a great film. It definitely has that bleak, lonely Italian quality to it. It's almost as surreal as El Topo, but in a very controlled, disciplined sense.

Oh, and no Italian horror thread would be complete without mention of Cannibal Holocaust, a film I'll never watch again.

If you like Suspiria, I highly recommend seeing Inferno - which is a "sequel" to Suspiria. Visually it is just as stunning. Mario Bava, another classic Italian horror director, helped direct the underwater scene from that movie.

Cannibal Holocaust initially converted me to vegetarian but I am proudly back to the meat-eating tendencies.

The cinematography in that clip you posted is really beautiful - very patient. :thumb:

Watched Inferno a few weeks ago, and Phenomena just last Sunday. Next on the line is Tenebrae. ;)

NIce, jwar, nice.

fungalattack, I think you'll like it. It's got a quiet intensity to it and the cinematography is truly outstanding (probably the best thing about the movie).
