just got this email
hello, I do not know if you remember me, I bought your XXXXX few months ago.
I wondered if it would be possible for you to send me a bill ... That would be REALLY REALLY nice. I am a musician, self-employed and I would need an invoice for my taxes .. It can be very simple (eg, Word, Excel, PDF etc ...) It would give me a big boost!
Thank you very much!!
obviously i'm not handing out an invoice for my CL sales
but is this kosher?
I definitely sold him that item (it was part of an email thread for the sale of the item)
it's a first for me.
IIRC 450$ sale.

I know that in Australia, to issue an invoice (for the buyer's tax purposes or anything else), you have to be registered as a business.
If you're not registered as a business, you can't issue an invoice (here).
I assume it's the same over there? I'd reply with "Hi, since this was a private sale of a second-hand item, and I am not registered as a business, I unfortunately cannot legally provide you with an invoice. As such, it would most likely be illegal for you to claim this item as an expense for tax purposes. Kind regards, ...."

One guy had me sign a receipt he wrote up for a thing I sold him. Of course, he tried to walk off without pay, so there's that.
I dunno. Why doesn't he just type it up himself?

because if he gets audited, which is more likely than not if he's deducting pedlulz as expenses, he'll need actual receipts. and they can check to see when and where computer documents were generated. anybody can generate receipts for tax purposes in the US.

Ha what a nerd... All the above plus just tell him it was a private sale and you're not a D.B.A... You have to know this kinda stuff in advance not after the tax bill comes... Why is everyone all the sudden a tax cheater...

You don't need anything official to write up a receipt. When I sold a guy my motorcycle, he wanted a receipt, so I just typed one up in Word. It took 2 minutes.

I would go ahead and do it...the only way it could get you in trouble would be for not claiming the sale as income on your own taxes, but the odds of that happening seem very unlikely.

exactly the same over here in Germany.
So i wouldn't write it now. Like Donny said, why he didn't thought of it when the actual deal happened
btw, what is more common over here is to do a "sale contract" - just to fix formal exchange of the amount of money and the good. But that is no invoice that will work for tax stuff...

I get he probably wants to offset his income with expenses he's made, but that's why stuff in stores is more expensive.
he ain't getting one.
he might as well just forge one, there'd be nothing official about what I'd give him anyways.
edit:
dude just re-listed the item for sale on CL
guess he couldn't afford it?
