Back in the day fake was bad.
The Monkees were derided because they didn’t play on their own recordings.

People would actually complain about a movie or record that sucked.

Today fake is good and mediocrity is celebrated.
Oscars, Grammys, and Nobel prizes are give out to people who haven’t done anything of note and in a few cases anything at all.

And having won, the recipients feel that they are now experts on any subject.
Sadly politicians, whose main concern is their own careers and power believe, these people are now experts also and actually listen to them.

post-postmodernism is seeing/"finding" depth in superficiality. its a new symbolism where everything on the surface is meant to mean something whether it does or does not.

if people actually cared about substance, Nicki Minaj would have much less haters than she has.

yeah, i said it. disagree? i'll tell you why you shouldn't

People have been saying this forever.

I'm unconcerned, enough of this good old days crap, people should learn to live within the world as it is, just make the best of it, at least thats how i try to live. I believe in the opinions, talents, intelligence of the people i surround myself with, just try to ignore the idiots who are unfortinatly in the spotlight and mind of the media/everyday jerk-off

Learn to laugh at them

Sorry if i offended u metalmariachi

Yeah, but that still doesn't change the fact that we're going to hell in a handbasket.

We'll see where the internet takes us. In the past, people were forced to eat what the media fed them. They had to listen to what was available to listen to. It's a brave new world and we're still young in it. I have faith that humanity will rise against the machine and return to a day of honest talent. The days of the troubadours when there were no mega stars but there were a ton of talented people doing what they love for a career. I think we're seeing the bloated beast that the industry has become....but the weapon that can slay it has been forged....the people just need to get to a point where they're sick enough of the industry to turn to the webz for solace.....and add in any other cliche I missed.

it's inaccurate to say that back in the day fake was BAD. that was only true within a small group of self-appointed cognoscenti, as has always been true in American pop culture and probably true of other pop culture as well. people LIKE artificial. people LIKE perfect. most people don't want quirky, unusual stuff with intriguing flaws, textures, and defects. they never have in the history of recorded music. look at the charts for any period since they've been kept, whether you're talking about America, Britain, or anywhere else. the Eagles outsold the Velvets, the Dead, and the Ramones. combined. Take That, Bananarama, and Wham! outsold Joy Division. Elvis outsold Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry. ad infinitum. even when it comes to classical music, most folks prefer the most even, least idiosyncratic, least emotionally expressive interpretations available. that's just how most people apprehend music, or the arts in general for that matter. to expect anything else is pointless.

among people who do look deeper into the arts there's a different problem: that--as different to Gearmond's take above--IMO superficiality is inherent in postmodernism's reduction of everything to the mere signifier. once meaning is entirely fluid, making any clear or definitive statement is kind of pointless because it can be defined and interpreted out of existence, so folks nowadays seem to make shallow statements in really broad gestures...things like Coldplay's "i will fix you" or that awful song they play on VH1 with the anthemic grunge-revival chorus that goes something like "whatever comes next/i will be there..." Now, there's commitment :whateva:

so what's the answer? to me: do it for yourself. if anyone else likes it, God bless 'em. but myself, i'm doing it so i can do something i'm proud of before i die. in a way it doesn't even matter if anyone hears it. i'm not doing it for other people...it's my path. i like the Belle and Sebastian line: "do something pretty while you can...don't fall asleep."
