I wanna move. Where is cool?

I figured I'd ask around here, since one of my main reasons for asking is the music-related. I'm born and raised in Northern Colorado (Ft.Collins) and I have that "need to get the hell out" syndrome something bad. I've tried moving northwest (Olympia, WA, specifically) but I ran out of funds, plus "life" happened and I decided to try Denver, which was equally fruitless. I really want to start some kind of doom/noise type of band, but I'd like to do my research enough to not have a completely shitty time wherever I end up. Someplace with a supportive music scene and people that would appreciate that particular side of music. I really don't want to sound like I'm setting my sights high, I'm realistic about goals and expectations, BUT, I live in a town where dubstep is basically considered "noise 'music' ."

I know somewhere on here is a "where are you from" thread, but I thought I'd toss this one in and see what turned up. Thanks, dudes!

edit: I don't really get weird when I end up in big-ish cities (Denver, for one) but I really need my trees and water and shit. Thus, the attempted move to the Northwest.

This may seem odd but, how old are you?
I think age can make a big difference in where you might find like minded people with similar interest. :idk:

don't come to the San Francisco Bay Area. i've lived here for thirty years, and unless you already know folks here it's very hard to break into the rather clannish scenes around here even if you have an out-of-town rep. it's also insanely expensive to live here unless you live 30 or 40 miles from everything, and if you don't have a dependable car living anywhere in California is pretty much out of the question. plus, finding non-music employment is difficult; the recession is still in full effect here.

I'll just say Asheville because I think it's cool.

Disclaimer: it may or may not be cool, I've never been there

28. 29 in July. And that's a very good point.

As for Asheville, if anyone one here (Blackout Kyle.... :poke: .......) has any input, I'd love it. I've heard/read a ton of great things about it, but I've also heard that it can be kinda "Hippy," in that "spontaneous drum circle" sort of way. HOWEVER, there are a LOT of really cool bands from the surrounding areas.....

While I did love a lot of things about the Northwest, I'd also like to go someplace completely new, so there's that.

I've been to Austin, TX a couple times, and my job has a store there so I could transfer and have a job, BUT, Austin might be "Too cool" for me. Not sure yet, on that one. I can't decide if I'd rather have a "lot of coolness," and deal with the annoying "hip" aspects that come with that, or a smaller place that's easier to live in but has a cool community sort of thing, where everyone "knows" when someone(s) is doing something really worthwhile, and everyone "knows" it. Not that I'm trying to talk myself up. More just making some over-convoluted analogies... Make any sense? :idk:

Asheville isn't too bad but definitely has a strong "hippy" aspect, probably similar to Boulder.
Richmond seemed fairly cool but I wasn't there long. The friends of mine that live there seem to like it.
So I'll say Richmond....get packing.

Why don't you go to the middle of Jesusland for 6 months -- Some place with more megachurches than Walmarts -- then everywhere you go afterwards will seem extra awesome.

Its cool if you want guys in tye dye dresses that look like thom daltons to ask you for change any time you exit anything. Also youre going to get lost. Alot. Asheville as a city is pretty lame. Cool shit goes on from time to time but there are long stretches of hateful nothingness inbetween.

On the upside its the only place you can get moog beer. And the spokesgirl for the project is hot and puts out.

Honestly there are some cool bands from around here but they rarely actually play here. Most clubs/promoters are shady as fuck. Its part of living in this part of the carolinas man....nothing is ever on the level. Shit is really back alley and underhanded. Take if from somebody who has been there/done that move to ATL if you want to be where shit is going on in the south. Always great shows. Cool people most of the time. Good food. Chicks put out. Just about all the venues are within walking distance of cheap liquor stores. Cops are pretty cool unless youre in the hood or youre shitfaced in buckhead and wrecking shit. Also every doom band in the world plays atlanta and alot are from there.

   Fuck you

I can't escape it. One time in school I wore a baseball hat to class and blew people's minds. "You're wearing...a baseball hat? But you wear knitted hippie hats... This is so weird." Also: "You're wearing socks?!"

I don't know why/how I give off these hippie vibes so much.

JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A 60's SHASTA CAMPER AND A GIRLFRIEND NAMED INGA, AND WEAR KNITTED HATS, SANUKS, AND PLAY ACOUSTIC GUITAR?

Okay. Proceed with thread.

I agree with the Atlanta and Richmond recommendations. Richmond has a healthy metalish scene, doom would be no problem. All my info on Richmond comes from touring bands that I have played with from there. Atlanta is fun. Been there several times.
