Hmmm, I disagree and agree. I agree that most forms of protest used these days are silly and ineffective. However, I don't think it has anything to do with how much the protester is inconvenienced so much as how much the group being protested is inconvenienced.
MLK filled the jails, Lech Walesa inspired unified, nation-wide strikes. Those guys got results not because somebody saw what they were willing to give up, but because the authorities were being leveraged via their own greater interests.

This link is dead on.
I mean, I'm fine with SOPA not passing, but I fully intend to fling shit at Harry Reid next time I'm in DC.

I have no problem with the basic premise IN THEORY.
I mean, who doesn't want our intellectual property protected?!
My problem is when a politician starts talking about it. I immediately wonder who this is really for?! AND once a bill like this is passed and signed into law, no doubt full of ambiguous language, the politicians now have a foot in the door to start tweaking and interpreting such things in ways that screw everyone over.
United states trademark and copyright law doesn't extend abroad. You need to secure international trademark or copyright status.
Then how the heck do you enforce this? oh you take a place like ILF and say they are liable if any content on the site infringes.
NOPE! That is not the way it works. the copyright holder polices their intellectual property and litigates against infringers.
A good example is Martin guitars. China says they waited too long to file for trademark protection. Now there are cheap chinese acoustics that are even labeled "c.f martin and co" selling for $200.
I totally understand that they want to protect their name and reputation but anyone who buys a new "martin" guitar for $200 and is surprised when it implodes is an idiot and wouldn't have bought a real one anyway.
I think the market, when left alone, does a good job at weeding out the cheap knockoffs and rewarding quality products.
I apologize for the long winded response and hopefully didn't bore anyone. I think we individuals need to be responsible for the actions we take and no politician is going to convince me that they know better than I do what the right choices are for me.
If I needed protection from myself I'm sure I could find someone willing to kick the crap out of me for free. HA!
