so i've never had a wah, and after listening to various stoner music, i feel like i want to finally add one to my setup. what's a good starting point? the CAE MC404 looks sweet, but i know nothing about wah's. any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't tried that one you mentioned, but never had any luck with any Dunlop wah.
The Teese RMC stuff is great, esp the Wheels of Fire. The old Colorsounds are good too. They do suck a bit when off though.
If you're lucky and stumble on an old Maestro Boomerang, grab it.

for the price of a CAE, I'd probably grab a Wilson Tunable Colorful Clone (a Colorsound wah thing) or look for a used Teese RMC3 or something. but yeah...look at Wilson stuff. I have a Wilson Sig, it's as good as you could hope for in a Vox-styled wah.

I'm the wrong person to answer this. Vox-styled wahs have too short a throw for me.
I had an RMC3. Too much tweaking.
Get something simple to start. Play as many wahs as you can to get an idea of what you like.

Guitar I have always loved the Vox wah

Lately though after being unhappy for a great many years I have decided on a mooger LPF with a exp for wahing

Thread jacking, but does anyone know where it usually works best to place a wah in a signal chain? I can never manage to place it without either overdoing it and sounding weird, or under-doing it and not having it noticeable., but maybe I just have a bad wah (Eleca).

For me, wah always comes first, although some fuzzes (especially octave fuzzes) will make the wah not perform correctly if they're both engaged. you can always run the wah after those, but I'm not a fan of the eardrum damage of wah-after-fuzz sounds.

I prefer my wah after dirt and before modulation/delay.

Ah it depends! you see wah > dirt is you "normal" sound, but! fuzz > way will give you synth goodness

and this is way I say dirt > wah > dirt

Because you're an american, get a Wilson. The price is more friendly for you then for us in EU

RMC1 is also wonderful
