What really makes it suck is that usually the 2 or 3 years BEFORE you buy a house is when you have a little bit of money to throw around, and you feel rich. That's the whole reason you buy a house in the first place, because you THINK that you're financially in a good enough play to finally plunk down money for a fucking house. Then the bills start to come in. Utilities you never knew you had to pay for before. Water. Sewer. Property taxes. Fire district tax (what the fuck?). Your fucking hot-water-heater goes (SHIT). Random dumb shit like buying a lawnmower. Like needing to plunk down money for a big fucking 30' ladder so I can clean out the gutters.

Yeah, owning a house is simultaneously the most awesome and horrendously awful thing I've ever done.

Then again, I thought I knew what broke was before I had a kid.

This thread cracks my shit up. I wholeheartedly agree with all of this. I just bought a house in November and its like "what a deal, its only a little more than my rent was..." Except for all of the millions of extra little things that go with it.

Our mortgage is cheap--even with taxes and insurance my mortgage is still about what most of my friends pay for rent--but then there's utilities, just opened my $150 gas bill today (even though our furnace is set at 63), had a $118 electric bill to go with it the other day. And just all the stupid little maintenance things that add up...I feel like home depot should just direct debit half of each paycheck because we seem to be in there several times every damn week just to buy random things we need for the house, and who knew this shit was so expensive! Even little things really add up.

Anyway, I still love the house, and I still see it as a good investment, but shit its expensive. Bigchief hit the nail on the head--we were broke even when we were renting, then started making a little more money and were like "shit, we can afford a house!" So we bought a house and now we're broke again. Sure we have a house now, so it isn't for nothing, but nevertheless I feel like we are more broke now than we were when we were really broke. At least we don't have kids. And at least we have a home equity to cover all of the shit that breaks (and simultaneously get us deeper in debt).

Anyway, to quote my wife "you can't live in a fucking pedal, Jeffrey"

 Yeah, we've had that argument a few times now...no pedals for me for a while...
