to me Havel was really one of the heavyweights of the 20th century, one of the foremost dissidents and fighters against tyranny. he was persecuted for his art, and rose from that oppression to become the President of the state which was successor to the state that imprisoned him, and throughout this process retained his decency, his idealism, and his general humanity to a degree that was truly unusual in a politician of world prominence. How rare in any time for a newly-minted leader to decline to persecute those who oppressed him! out of all the world's leaders, Vaclav Havel may well be the only one who i'd like to have had as a house guest. some people start out as artists, and wind up changing history because that's the logical conclusion of their work. he was one. RIP.

Very well said

i'm too young to experience the whole Velvet revolution, but i remember him as a respectful and respected man (and that's a real thing in a state where president is just a symbol!) and the way I see him, he's the embodiment of the fact that a person can change something in the system
